Seattle, WA
July 1990

With her hand on her back, Summer waddled down the ramp from the airplane, following her eleven-year-old who pushed his young sister in a small fold-up stroller. Her blue eyes glanced around the terminal, trying to figure out which direction to head for the car. Knowing Cameron would not like her driving at seven months pregnant, she arranged a town car to pick up the small family for the surprise visit to Seattle. He probably would not even like that she had taken the quick flight to the Emerald City, but she had cleared it with the doctor before taking to the skies. She was not going to miss her husband’s birthday for any reason.

“Mommy,” Hayley reached for once they were all settled in the back of the town car.

Letting the young girl shift into her lap as she did not have a proper baby seat anyways, Summer cuddled her as her thumb popped into her mouth. While there had been a bit of turbulence on the plane when they left LA, she was not entirely certain what brought on Hayley’s actions. Whatever the cause, as soon as she saw her step daddy, Summer knew the little girl would cheer up. She always did.

“Hey, Mom?” Jamie spoke up as the car merged into freeway traffic.

“Yeah?” her eyes flicked to his as she stroked Hayley’s blond curls.

“Do you think we’ll get to meet Soundgarden?”

“There’s a good chance of it,” Summer responded. “Cameron is friends with them and I believe they have been on set too.”

“Really?” his eyes widened slightly. “Dad is so cool.”

She smiled at the fact he called Cameron Dad, “Will you be okay if you meet Soundgarden?”

“I… I don’t know.”

Chuckling, Summer reached over and messed his dark hair, “You are the son of the man who inspired a lot of them to play guitar. I’m pretty sure they’re going to think you’re pretty cool too.”

His demeanor darkened some at the mention of Jimmy, “Well they shouldn’t. Dad is much cooler.”

“Be sure you tell him that, Jamie,” she smiled. “He’ll love that.”

He smiled again, “Do you think he’s going to be surprised?”

“I know he’s going to be surprised. I told him we were going to the beach when we spoke this morning, not getting on a plane and checking into a hotel in the city where he’s filming,” she responded.

His blue eyes looked out the window, “Mom! Look! There’s the Space Needle. Can we go see it?”

“Maybe,” she replied with a wink. “Let’s just focus on getting settled and ready to surprise Cameron.”

Once checked into the suite of rooms at the hotel, Summer left the children to get settled on their own while she sat down to locate her husband. With the door cracked so she could keep one eye on Hayley while the toddler pulled toys out her small suitcase, she sat near a phone and pulled a small black phone book from her purse. Finding Cameron’s assistant’s phone number, she picked up the phone and quickly dialed it, knowing she was the one person she could always get on the phone.

“Hey, Lisa,” she smiled as she greeted the assistant. “We’ve landed and checked in just fine. When would be a good time to surprise Cameron? And where should we go?”

I’ll send someone to pick you up in an hour. Will that work for you?

“That will be perfect. Thank you.”

Holding the three-year-old’s hand, Summer slowly made her way through the crew to where Cameron talked the actors through the scene. She stopped just outside of his immediate area, watching him work and hushing her daughter. A slow smile curved her lips as the cameras began to roll once more. There was a certain ease and grace in his motions, as if his confidence in his abilities, the writing and directing, had finally clicked in place.

Slowly squatting next to Hayley, knowing Jamie was already completely silenced by the fact a few members of Pearl Jam milled about the set, she reminded the toddler to be silent while Cameron worked. Once the scene ended and the cameras stopped rolling, Summer instructed the young girl to go hug her step daddy while she slowly stood back up. The curly-haired girl quickly skirted through the cast and crew, hopping easily over cords, mic stands, and other equipment. Before Cameron even had the chance to turn her direction, the young girl flung herself at his legs, quickly wrapping her little arms around one.

“Wha — Hayley? How did you get here?” he asked, prying the girl from his leg so he could pick her up and properly embrace her.

“We flyeded on a big plane, Dadda!” she exclaimed.

“We?”

“Hello, handsome,” a soft, sweet voice spoke.

His brown eyes instantly found hers and he grinned. Even with all the cast and crew around them, the whole world faded away and centered just on his wife. He took a couple of steps forward, closing the space between them. He shifted Hayley to one hip and reached for Summer’s hand with his free one. Her fingers quickly wiggled free of his, cupped his hand, and guided him into a quick, love-filled kiss.

“What are you… How did you…?”

Summer kissed him again, “I’ll explain it all later. You have work to do.”

“But…”

Her lips brushed his, “I’ll take Hayley and we’ll go sit and watch you do your magic.”

“We are almost done for the day…”

“Don’t rush it on account of us. I’m sure Jamie would love to linger here among his idols as long as possible.”

He glanced behind her at her older child, his blue eyes wide as he looked around the set. Smirking, Cameron kissed Summer quickly once more, handed over her daughter, and stepped away to re-focus back on his work. Turning his attention back to the cast, he set up the next part of the scene with a half-giddy smile on his face. His wife unexpectedly showed up on locale in Seattle. The day could not get much better than that.

Sitting across from Summer at dinner, Cameron could not help but grin. He was completely touched that she had picked up the kids and flown up to be with him. They had spent a number of his birthdays together, so it really was not that big of a deal for her to miss this one. Thirty-three was not a big deal in any event. But there she was, his blushing bride, beautiful in lacy baby doll dress. It made him… giddy.

“What are you thinking?” she asked, glancing over the top of the menu.

“You are the most beautiful woman I have ever known and I am so very lucky to have you in my life,” he responded.

She smiled and shook her head, “You’re supposed to be deciding what you want for dinner, silly.”

“I can’t help it. You distract me,” he grinned before glancing at the menu as their server approached the table.

The two placed their orders before weaving their fingers in the center of the table. Cameron’s eyes danced over her face. He had never realized it before, but the belief that pregnant women glowed was in fact true. Life seemed to fill every pore of her face in ways he could not explain. He could not attribute it only to the fact they dined without children in a nice restaurant — courtesy of his assistant acting as babysitter that evening. Nor did Cameron think it was because she was with him. It had to do with the baby growing inside her, his baby — no, their baby.

“I love you so much, Summer,” he muttered softly. “I can’t…”

She lifted his hand to her mouth and kissed it, “I love you too, husband.”

He smirked, “I am still not used to hearing that.”

Her lips touched his wedding band, “Well we have only been married for about two months…”

“It feels like only a day.”

She smiled, “Sometimes it feels like forever, though.”

“Only because we’ve known each other so long,” he countered.

“Maybe…” Summer paused. “Tell me, Mr. Crowe, what do you want for your birthday?”

He smirked, “Nothing. I have everything I could possibly want: a beautiful wife, two wonderful children with another on the way, a job that challenges me…”

“Oh but there must be something.”

“Well,” he released her hands as their server approached with their plates, “there is one thing.”

“What would that be?” she asked, her eyes still locked with his.

“There’s a few albums…”

Summer smiled, before glancing down at their plates. Her blue eyes settled on the lobster in front of her. She really had only wanted the meat of the lobster’s tail, not the whole entire thing. Seeing the entire dead crustacean filling her plate instantly triggered a flood of emotions. Before Cameron finished chewing his initial bite of his steak, large tears rolled down her cheeks.

“Baby?” he muttered, his eyes settling on her.

“I c-can’t… they… it’s…” she stuttered, unable to form words to explain her emotions.

Her soft sobs increased to full on crying. Panic filled his eyes. Though he had been by her side through her previous pregnancies, her reaction to the lobster was completely unexpected. Cameron quickly waved over the server, asked him to remove her plate, before turning his attention to calming his wife down. Moving his chair next to her, his arms circled her, his lips touching her temple. Her tears began to ease — but then the server returned with just the tail of the lobster on a plate. Summer once more burst into tears.

“Um… maybe it would be better to just bring the check,” Cameron suggest, glancing around as others in the dining hall watched Summer’s pregnant outburst.

The server nodded, swept the plate away, and hurried to follow his instructions. Quickly paying, Cameron ushered Summer from the restaurant, certain to keep his body between her and the tank of lobsters on their way out. They walked to the end of the block and sat on a bench, his arms once more around her, reassuring her that everything was fine.

“C-cam…”

“Shhhh,” he kissed her forehead softly. “It’s okay.”

“I r-ruined d-dinner.”

“Not at all,” Cameron declared. “We’ll just go find somewhere else to eat. Fancy restaurants were never my thing anyways.”

“You s-sure?”

His lips touched her forehead, nose, then lips, “I’m very sure. How about we go find one of those buffets so we can feed whatever craving the baby has now?”

Her eyes wavered as she looked into his, “I love you s-so much, Cameron.”

“I love you too,” he kissed her again. “Let’s go, my love. Everything is okay.”

With the failure of their date night, Summer was a bundle of nerves for Cameron’s actual birthday dinner. The children went to work with him — something she was uncertain about but did not fight — giving her the chance to supposedly relax. Instead, she was fretting over the evening’s plans. Already she called the restaurant three times to make certain there would be no issues like the night before. She felt more like a basketcase than she ever had before, but would not blame it on her pregnancy.

Sighing, she reached for the phone once more. Before she could call the restaurant with another comment, the phone rang. Frowning she picked it up, slowly pressing it to her ear. A smile quickly lit up her face.

Mommy?

“Hi there, Hayley. Are you having fun?”

Uh huh.

“What are you up to now?”

There was a very brief pause, “Dad says we’re gonna head back soon.

“So soon?”

Uh huh. Dad just has a quiet scene to finish and then we’re done.

Summer responded, “Thank you for calling and letting me know. When you get back, should we take Dad to ice cream?”

REALLY!?

“You talk to him about it. And I’ll see you soon.”

After ice cream with her husband and kids, Summer napped in the hotel suite while Cameron played in the other room with the kids. She rolled out of the bed an hour later, visited the bathroom, rubbed more lotion on her belly, and slowly headed out to join her family. Leaning on the doorway, she watched as her daughter giggled at some comment Cameron made before moving his piece on the game board.

“Mommy!” Hayley looked up, grinning widely.

“Hey, Mom,” Jamie glanced up.

“Are you letting Cameron win?” she teased, making her way over to her husband.

He got up from the floor and kissed her quickly, “No. I am an expert at Candyland. You know that.”

She rolled her eyes slightly, “Whatever you say, Cameron.”

“Mommy,” Hayley tugged on her shirt, “I hungry.”

“Well,” she slowly squatted down to the three-year-old’s level, “you and me need to get all pretty for Dad’s special birthday dinner.”

“But, Mommy, you’re always pretty,” she declared.

“No,” Cameron interrupted, “that’s not entirely true, Hayley.”

Three pairs of blue eyes snapped to him.

He leaned down and kissed his wife quickly, “Sometimes you’re not just pretty; you’re beautiful.”

“Cam…”

He kissed her again before helping her back up to her feet, “So beautiful.”

“Ewwwwwwww,” both of the children shouted when they kissed a third time.

Two hours later, the family of four sat at small table overlooking the Snoqualmie Falls. Keeping the children next to the windows so that they were distracted by the sights outside, Summer and Cameron chatted happily. He recounted stories from being on set, while she filled him in on moments he missed back at home in California. It was relaxed, without any pressure at all. Even with interruptions from the children pointing out wildlife or the delivery of their food, the couple flowed seamlessly together.

As dessert was delivered, sans a hokey birthday song, Summer reached into her large purse while the children shoveled sweets into their mouths happily. She removed a manila envelope and placed it on the table in front of Cameron. Setting down his fork, he picked it up.

“What’s this, Sum?”

“Your birthday present… well from me anyways,” she responded.

Turning the envelope over, he broke the seal. His dark eyes flicked up to hers briefly, hoping she would give him some kind of hint as to the contents. Summer remained silent, a slight smile on her face. His fingers slipped into the envelope and pulled out a few glossy pieces of paper. He glanced over the grainy images, flipping through the pictures. He knew what they were, but did not quite understand how it was a gift.

“You went to the doctor without me?” he muttered, sadness edging his voice as his eyes lifted to meet hers.

Summer reached across the table, “You were busy on set, love. And I only scheduled it to for the sonogram.”

“But…”

“Cam, look closely at the last one,” she instructed.

His eyes dropped back down to the last image, “Okay…”

“This is the baby’s head,” she pointed out, tracing upside down on the picture upside down. “Two little hands, two little feets, one little penis…”

He flushed at her words before fully processing them. Realizing what she just said, Cameron’s eyes went to hers expectantly. Saying nothing, she smiled and nodded once. He looked back down at the picture, touching it gently.

“We’re…?”

“Yes,” she nodded.

Before Cameron could say anything else, Hayley announced loudly that she needed to go to the potty. With a smirk, Summer stood up and led her sticky daughter to the bathroom. Cameron continued to stare at the image, trying to process his feelings over what his wife gifted him. It was so simple and so perfect. He loved her more than words could say. And he would show her that once he had the opportunity.

When they returned to the hotel suite, the children brought forth wrapped packages. Though he loved and appreciated the number of vinyls and a few movies they gifted him, he could not stop thinking about Summer’s gift. As much as he loved Jamie and Hayley, it was a relief when they went to bed. It finally afforded him a moment of time with his wife alone.

As he entered the bedroom, his breath left with a happy sigh. Summer lay on the bed, the sheet pulled taut over her body. There was no doubt in his mind she was nude underneath the sheet. Therefore he locked the door behind him before approaching the bed. He stopped and stripped down to his boxers, smirking as she pulled the sheet off, showing exactly as he expected. His eyes swept her body before settled on her rounded belly. His thoughts instantly returned to her present.

Crawling across the bed, Cameron’s hand slid over her belly. Without pause, he leaned down and kissed her navel. Her hand reached up and rubbed his head lovingly. With a smile on his face, he turned so that his cheek pressed against her belly, but his eyes looked up through the mountains of her breasts to meet her blue eyes.

“We’re having a son,” he muttered.

“We are,” she responded, her fingers still playing with his hair.

“God, I love you so much, Summer. I never thought… I only dreamed… We’re having a son.”

Summer nodded, “We are.”

“I am so very lucky to have you,” he stated, leaning up to kiss her. “So very lucky.”

“I love you, husband,” she kissed him deeply before muttering, “Happy birthday.”
