Warnings/Spoilers/Summary: It's Easter, 1976. Summer is spending the holiday with Bonzo and his family. Two surprise guests, bearing gifts, change the course of the day, and perhaps more. Totally canon and totally has spoilers.
April 1976
Carrying a basket of hard-boiled white eggs, Summer followed Bonzo into the dining room. She had no clue what they were going to do with the eggs, or why they had spent the past hour boiling the eggs. While he and his young son had attempted to explain the holiday to her, there was still a massive disconnect between the eggs and a fluffy bunny. She was hoping whatever activity they were about to do with the eggs would explain it all.
As soon as Summer sat down at the table, Pat entered the room, baby on her hip. Zoë wiggled and reached for Summer. Rolling her eyes, the older woman released the baby to the young girl, leaving the room grumbling under her breath.
“Did I do something wrong?” Summer asked softly, her eyes going to Bonzo.
“Not at all,” he declared, setting an egg in front of her. “She’s just bloody cranky because Zoë kept her up all night again. Don’t worry about her, sweet pea.”
“Well if you say so…” she responded, bouncing the baby on her knee until the girl giggled. “What am I supposed to do with that egg?”
Bonzo looked at her and smiled, “Color it, love.”
“I show!” Jason announced, reaching for his egg.
Kissing the top of Zoë’s head, Summer watched as the young boy dunked the egg into a cup of colored dye. He laughed as it splashed out, leaving a blue-colored puddle on the table. Before long the table was covered with puddles of dye, each cup held an egg, and both Jason’s and Bonzo’s fingers now the colors of the rainbow. Zoë had reached out for an egg, helping Summer dunk it, leaving the girls’ fingers softly purple.
“John!” Pat sighed as she re-entered the room. “What am I going to do with you?”
“Oh I can think of a couple of things,” he declared, embraced her, and kissed her.
She pushed him away, twisting to see the handprints now on her shirt. Rolling her eyes, she shoved him away playfully and moved towards Summer and the baby. Rescuing her baby daughter from colorful mess, she shot a look at Summer as if she should have stopped the mess, before leaving the three to their task.
“Okay,” Bonzo clapped, “let’s pull the eggs out and see what color they are!”
Sitting in the back of the car, Jimmy watched the scenery change. While he appreciated the fact both Bonzo and Robert chose to withdraw back to the countryside when not touring and recording, it did seem bloody far away. Perhaps if Summer had not been swept away from John Paul’s house and spirited away to Bonzo’s country estate, he would think differently. Of course had Summer remained where she was supposed to, he would not be making such a drive on Easter to see her. That was not how it was, however, so making the drive to see her was necessary.
As the car pulled up at the Bonham residence, Jimmy smirked to himself. It was unsurprising to see the house crawling with children, as the drummer was half-child himself. With a few other cars parked out front, Jimmy slipped into the fray unnoticed, slowly making his way to the backyard where the adults likely were. Standing in the shadows, knowing his dark green silk shirt and black trousers would conceal his presence to most.
From his vantage point, he could see both the patio and the grassy backyard. Jimmy first looked over the collection of adults, sitting around sipping glasses of wine. A bit surprised to not find his princess among the guests, he frowned and glanced out at the yard. Squatting near a leafy bush, a basket in hand, Summer reached for a brightly colored egg, baby Zoë sitting on the grass beside her. The young baby accepted the egg from the young woman, promptly sticking it in her mouth. Chuckling to himself, Jimmy smiled, as his eyes remained focused on the blond. Summer carefully removed the egg from the baby’s mouth and dropped it in the basket. Standing back up, she lifted Zoë onto her hip and reached for the basket.
He watched her collect a couple more eggs before returning to the patio. Summer handed the baby back before setting the Easter basket aside. With her back to him, he could not read her lips as she spoke with Bonzo, but a moment later she turned around, heading from the patio. Dressed in a summery, peach dress, she headed directly towards him, though Jimmy did not believe intentionally so. With her blue eyes on the wet grass, she did not notice his presence until his hand reached out and lightly touched hers as she walked pass.
Instantly stopping, her blue eyes darted up to his dark eyes. A smile instantly lit her face. Her arms quickly circled his neck and she kissed his mouth happily. He embraced her tightly, pressing the small box to her back without thought.
“Jimmy,” she breathed, her eyes looking into his, “what are you doing here?”
He smiled, “I came to wish my princess Happy Easter.”
“You could have just called me on the phone,” she responded.
“That would make it impossible to give you this,” Jimmy loosened his embrace of her to hold the box in front of her.
Her eyes dropped down to the white box, “A present? I didn’t know Easter was about presents.”
He kissed her nose, “Open it.”
Stepping back slightly, Summer pushed off the white box top, letting it fall to the wet grass. Inside the small box was a chocolate rabbit. Touching its ears gently, she looked up at Jimmy for explanation.
“Imported from Belgium,” he stated. “The best chocolate bunny in the world.”
She smiled and quickly bent over for the lid, “Thank you, Jimmy. I… I don’t have anything for you.”
“Your smile is enough,” his fingers caressed her cheek. “And your kiss.”
Summer kissed him quickly once more, “You drove all the way from London for me?”
“Of course I did,” he smiled, leaning in for another kiss.
“Do I get to come back with you?”
Jimmy halted centimeters from kissing her lips, frowning, “Unfortunately not.”
She stepped out of his embrace, “Oh well. Then you should be on your way.”
“Summer,” he followed as she continued towards her destination, “things are complicated. You know that.”
“You promised, Jimmy, that the next time I saw you, you would bring me home with you,” Summer declared, pausing at the corner of the house to look over the motley group of kids. “Jason! Your dad says it’s time for the big kids to come find eggs!”
“Okay, Summer!” the boy shouted in return before rounding up the other kids.
“Princess,” Jimmy reached for her as she turned to return to the backyard, “there’s a child involved. You know that complicates things.”
She snapped her arm out of his reach, her eyes meeting his, “You promised that you wouldn’t abandon me like Robert did, but that’s exactly what you’re doing.”
“Summer, this is not at all like Robert and you. I’m not married,” he argued. “Charlotte and I are looking at a number of houses on Tuesday. Hopefully she will find one she likes and I can then bring you home where you belong.”
“Do you mean that?”
“Yes.”
“No more staying with Bonzo or Jonesy?”
“Only if you want to.”
She stared at him for a moment, “Okay. You get one more chance.”
He stepped forward and kissed her gently, “I will not let you down, Princess.”
Sitting on the armrest of wicker chair Jimmy sat in, Summer smiled slightly as his fingers gently rubbed her thigh through the silken peach fabric of her skirt. Her eyes dropped down to his, bringing a smile to his face as well. She leaned over and kissed him sweetly. His arm circled around her waist, about to pull her into his lap. However, before Jimmy could accomplish this feat, Queenie bounded towards the couple, launching without pause into Jimmy’s lap. He swore at the dog, attempting to push her down, but the young Cavalier dog happily licked his face.
Peeling the dog off with some difficulty, Summer frowned down at Jimmy’s muddy paw print shirt, “I’m sorry.”
“Worry not,” he got to his feet. “I will merely change into another shirt. Do not miss much too much in my brief absence.”
He kissed her temple quickly and headed into the house, grateful he had packed an overnight bag. Once the guitarist disappeared into the house, Bonzo chased the dog back out into the grass, throwing her favorite toy and trying to tire her out. Refilling Pat’s wine glass, Summer froze, feeling a very familiar presence behind her. She carefully set down the wine bottle and turned. Her eyes met eyes a similar shade, a moment before Queenie noticed the newcomer and ran over to him. Quickly holding the box in his hands out of reach of the dog, he spoke softly, making the dog sit without reaching to her. Lips parted in surprise, Summer remained on the patio, not entirely sure what to think, what to do. Though she had seen him a month prior at the Presence release party, it had been a weird experience, as Maureen attended with him. Yet as their eyes held, she was inexplicably drawn towards him.
Slowly approaching the blond singer, Summer practically whispered a greeting.
“Hello, baby,” Robert responded, smiling sweetly.
“I… I…”
“I brought you something,” he offered her the box.
“Robert, you shouldn’t have,” she breathed, accepting the box.
His eyes watched as she removed the pink satin ribbon. Before she could lift up the flaps of the box, they opened on their own. A small pink nose twitched over the edge of the cardboard before large teeth began to nibble on box. Summer’s mouth dropped open, her fingers itching to reach in and lift the fluffy rabbit from its confines. Reading her unspoken wishes, Robert’s hands slipped under the box, his fingers briefly touching hers.
Summer reached into the box and lifted the white rabbit fully out of the box. Giggling she pressed her nose to it as her arm slipped under its back legs to support it. Her sparkling eyes went to Robert’s, a grin filling her face. He set down the box and stepped forward, scratching the bunny’s head.
“Robert… this is… adorable…”
His fingers left the bunny’s head to brush hair from her face, “She’s yours.”
“I… I… I don’t know the first thing about bunnies.”
He smiled crookedly, “We’ll learn together.”
“It can’t… she can’t sleep in my bed with me like Queenie…”
Robert chuckled, “No, sweetheart, she can’t. But I have a hutch all set up for her back at home.”
“Oh,” she responded, shifting the bunny towards him.
He pushed the bunny back to her, “She’s yours.”
“But the hutch…”
“Summer, there’s something you need to know.”
“What?”
“Maureen moved out last week.”
Her eyes widened, “What?”
“Come home with me. Come be with me.”
“Robert…”
“Oh hello, Percy. What is in the box?” Jimmy asked as he approached the two.
Summer turned towards the guitarist, “A bunny! Robert brought me a bunny!”
He swallowed, “Well isn’t that just… adorable.”
She grinned, “Isn’t she?”
“Splendid,” he glanced at the singer. “And where will she keep this gift?”
“At home. With me,” he answered.
“Oh really?”
Rolling her eyes, Summer stepped out from between the two men and headed over to Bonzo, cuddling the bunny. For a few long moments, the two men stared at each other before both pursued the blond girl. However, she sat on the patio with Bonzo and Jason, playing with the bunny. Both men found a chair far from the other and sat, their eyes focused on Summer. She paid neither man any attention, focused only on the bunny, letting them silently figure it out.
With the bunny curled up in its box, sleeping on one of Summer’s sweaters, the girl left it alone and helped tucked in Bonzo’s children. Heading out of Jason’s room, she closed the door and stopped in the hallway. Her eyes went to Robert’s and she smiled. He quickly kissed her before losing the moment.
“I meant what I said.”
“I know. I just… Jimmy promised…”
“Come home with me,” he requested softly.
Her eyes searched his, “You have no idea how long I have wanted to hear that, but…”
His hand cupped her cheek gently, “Please.”
Summer closed her eyes, “Robert, I… I don’t know that I’m ready for that.”
“I have been working on this for nearly a year, Summer. Please… please come home with me,” he requested softly.
She took a deep breath, “Okay. I’ll go home with you.”
“You won’t regret this, baby. I promise,” Robert kissed her. “I promise.”
