June 17, 1984
Los Angeles, California
Shuffling towards the kitchen, eyes half-open, Lily glanced at her son. The three-year-old quickly smiled up at her before getting up and rushing over to hug her legs. Smiling, she patted his head before slowly bending over and picking him up. Still grinning, he stuck his thumb in his mouth and rested his head on her shoulder.
“Awww, Greggie,” she tousled his unruly blonde curls, “where’s your daddy?”
He briefly spat out his thumb to answer her question and pointed at the stairs, “With the baby.”
“Well then,” she rubbed her eyes quickly, “we better go get him so we can make him breakfast for Daddy Day.”
“D’okay, Mommy.”
With her son on her hip, Lily slowly headed up the ornate staircase. Only home for a day, she had not time to really prepare much for Father’s Day that year. Granted, their daughter had chosen to join the family a week early as well. Maybe she was gift enough for Lindsey, though Lily really did not believe that. She would cook him his favorite breakfast and then… if she could maintain energy long enough, she would take Greg out to find a gift for Lindsey — that is if she could trust leaving the newborn home with him.
Stopping just outside the nursery, she considered heading to the master suite instead, as the baby had slept in a bassinet near their bed. Lily brushed that aside, thinking Lindsey might be attempting to get the newborn accustomed to her own room, even though they had barely left the hospital. As expected, her eyes fell upon Lindsey cradling their newborn daughter, seated in the rocking chair in her pink and purple nursery.
Slowly she approached father and daughter. Lindsey’s tired eyes rose from their daughter and met hers. He quickly grinned, the hand supporting the baby’s bottom slipping out and reaching for his fiancée and son. His fingers laced with Lily’s.
“She is so beyond perfect, Lil,” he commented softly. “I still cannot get over the fact we… created another life.”
She lifted his hand to her mouth and kissed it gently, “We did. And both the body that grew them and our son is hungry. Surely you are too, Daddy.”
“I… I suppose so. I hadn’t really thought about it. I woke up and you were gone and she was awake and kinda fussing so I thought I’d bring her in here and see if I could get her back to sleep and…”
Lily smiled, kissing his hand again, “Come downstairs and I’ll cook breakfast while you admire your children on this Father’s Day.”
His eyes widened slightly, “I completely forgot it was…”
“I know,” she tugged on his hand. “Come along and we’ll see about celebrating the daddy you are.”
As soon as Lily eased Gabrielle off her breast, Lindsey’s hands slipped under the newborn, guiding her to his shoulder. He rubbed the days-old baby’s back, hoping to ease a burp out of her. Watching as he tended to their daughter, Lily smiled and fixed her nightgown. He was light years beyond where he had been when Greg was born. Granted, Lindsey now knew how to change a diaper, bathe a baby, and all of that, but he definitely had a different aura surrounding him with their second child. She wondered if it had to do with the storms they weathered prior to the baby’s conception or if Lindsey had just finally become the full-time father he wanted to be. Every one of his actions was with love and care. She almost trusted to leave him alone with the baby, almost.
Breakfast had been beautiful, if not perfect. Greg insisted Lindsey needed colorful sprinkles on his pancakes and proceeded to empty the entire bottle on the warm stack. Laughing, Lindsey happily ate to his son’s delight, flashing big, goofy smiles at the young boy.
However, much to Lily’s chagrin, cooking breakfast sapped all of the new mother’s energy. She slipped into bed while father and son spent time in the backyard, splashing around in the pool. Even though she slept until Gabrielle needed nursing, Lily did not feel it prudent to venture out of the house. Maybe if she had not labored for twelve hours to deliver their daughter a few days before she would have had the energy she felt Lindsey deserved. She felt guilty for not making his Father’s Day absolutely spectacular.
With the baby burped, Lindsey lay her down in the bassinet near the king-sized bed he shared with Lily. He caressed her downy head briefly before turning away from the baby. His blue eyes instantly focused on Lily, who had sunk down from her seated, nursing position, and now lay curled on her side, looking at him. He could tell from her demeanor that something was wrong. Without pause, Lindsey crawled across the bed to her and kissed her forehead softly.
“What’s wrong, Lil?” he asked quietly as he laid down beside her.
“I’m sorry that Father’s Day was such a waste,” she muttered.
His eyes widened and he brushed her hair from her eyes, “What makes you say that? I had an amazing day. Breakfast with my family, swimming with my son, cuddles with my daughter, kisses from you, delivery dinner. It was a perfect day.”
“But I wanted to…”
Lindsey shifted closer to her, slipped his arms around her, and pulled her close, “It was a perfect day. I don’t need or want anything else but time with you and the kids.”
“But…”
“Lil,” he quickly kissed her, “you have given me the greatest gifts ever: our son and now our daughter… and your love. What more could I ever ask for?”
She remained silent for a moment, “I just wanted to show you…”
His lips touched hers again, “You don’t need to buy me things to show me anything, Lil. If anything, I’m the one who should be showering you with… everything in the world. You forgave me for being an asshole and that led to the creation of the most beautiful baby girl ever in all the lands. You don’t need to give me a single thing. I am already forever in your debt.”
She sighed again, “Linds…”
“Our children are everything important in this world. You know that. And for them I will owe you into perpetuity. I love you, Lily. And I love our kids. That’s all I will ever need in this life. You and them.”
She smiled slightly, “Really?”
“Absolutely,” he pulled her closer. “And Lil? You don’t have to be a superwoman. I am here to help you take care and raise Greg and Gabrielle. I’m here for you one hundred percent.”
Lily kissed him gently, “I love you.”
“That’s all I’ll ever need,” he squeezed her gently, “because I love you, too.”
“Happy Father’s Day, daddy of my children,” she smiled.
Before Lindsey could reply, a small cry drew both parents’ attention to the nearby crib. They held their breaths, waiting to see if Gabrielle really needed attention or was just making sounds. When she cried again, Lindsey quickly rolled out of the bed to attend to her. Lifting the newborn from her small bassinet, he kissed her until her crying stopped and then checked her diaper. With a smile, he headed to the nursery to change her diaper quickly.
As he tossed the small diaper into the diaper pail, a smile crept across his face. He realized with his heart and soul that he meant everything he said to Lily. She and the children were the greatest gifts he could ever receive. He needed nothing more. He knew that as the newborn girl cooed against his chest as he returned to the bedroom. Everything finally seemed to be… perfect.
