October 1981
Looking at the soft orange fabric in her hands, Lily held up the completed costume and smiled. It had taken her much longer than she expected, but she felt rather accomplished in following the pattern correctly and sewing a pumpkin costume for Greg. For whatever reason, sewing an infant costume seemed so much harder than sewing adult stage costumes.
Pushing back from her sewing machine, Lily got to her feet and stretched. She clicked off her machine, picked up the orange costume, and went in search of Lindsey. A smile instantly filled her face as she found father and son in the living room. The infant lay across Lindsey’s lap, gurgling and wiggling, while Lindsey made faces at him. For a few long moments, Lily just watched the two, loving the fact Lindsey was interacting with his son.
“Not to interrupt this charming moment, but someone needs to try on his costume,” Lily finally spoke up.
Lindsey glanced up, “I didn’t know you were making me one…”
She rolled her eyes and approached the boys, holding up the pumpkin costume.
“Babe, I don’t think that’s going to fit me.”
“Help me put it on him,” she ignored his statement.
Nodding, he shifted the baby in his lap, allowing Lily to slip the pumpkin costume over the boy’s head. Lindsey’s fingers tugged it down into place while Lily held their son up. The boy gurgled, reaching for his mother. She leaned down and kissed his forehead before pulling him up to see the fit of the costume.
“Awwwwww,” she grinned. “Look at our handsome little pumpkin.”
Lindsey pulled her into his now vacant lap, kissed her quickly, and glanced out their son, “Did you make this, Lil?”
She nodded, giggling as Greg wiggled in her lap, “I did. I made a cap too.”
He grinned, “He’s adorable, but… Lil… what does a baby need a costume for?”
“Halloween.”
“Um, okay, yeah… I still don’t understand.”
“Ugh, really?”
“Really, Lily. He’s too young to go trick or treating…”
She rolled her eyes and stood up, baby in her arms, “Halloween party, Lindsey.”
He stared blankly at her, “We are not taking our son to a Fleetwood Halloween party.”
“You’re right. We’re not. Your family is coming over here for a small Halloween party. I told you about this two weeks ago.”
Lindsey said nothing.
“Ugh, really? Do you not listen to me?”
“No! I listen to you all the time, Lil. I promise,” he quickly stated, getting to his feet.
She shook her head and turned away, heading from the room, “Whatever, Linds. I’m putting Greg down for his nap. You have things to pick up.”
“I do?”
She said nothing, leaving Lindsey standing in the living room wondering what he was missing. Trying to figure it out on his own for a minute, he sighed and turned, reaching for the phone. Quickly considering who would be the most likely one to know what the hell Lily was talking about, he dialed Chris’s number.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Chris, it’s Lindsey. I was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions for me…”
She sighed, “This is about Halloween, isn’t it?”
Lindsey paused for a moment, “How did you know?”
“Lily said you would call. What do you need to know?”
“Well for one… what the hell am I supposed to be doing that night?”
After a successful small, family party, Lindsey waved at his brothers as they climbed into cars to head back to their hotels. He turned and returned to the house, closing the door behind him. They had trick or treated with the older kids at his neighbors’ houses, something he had never considered in all honesty, but apparently Lily knew all their neighbors well, before watching old classic horror movies. It was a very simple and very domestic holiday.
And to be completely honest, Lindsey found himself preferring it over the wild and crazy Fleetwood parties. No drugs, no booze, no crazy things he would not remember the following day. Just homey time with his love and their child and his family.
How the hell had that happened?
Lily.
“Lil? Baby, where are you?” he called.
Her blond head leaned over the upstairs balcony and she smiled, but said nothing. Knowing she was putting their son to bed, Lindsey quickly made certain the house alarm was set and hurried upstairs. He stepped into the nursery as she settled into her rocking chair with the pumpkin-less Greg in her lap. Her golden eyes fluttered up to Lindsey as Greg latched onto her breast.
“My god you’re beautiful,” he muttered and stepped forward.
She smiled crookedly, “I don’t know what brought that on. It’s not like you’ve not seen me do this daily for months now.”
“I… I can’t explain it,” he knelt in front of them. “I mean… tonight has been calm and serene and yet… so much fun. I have really enjoyed this sober Halloween. I didn’t think I would at first. But, Lil… it was amazing. And your costume… baby, you are the most beautiful black cat I’ve ever seen.”
She flushed slightly, “I’m glad you enjoyed it, Linds. I just wanted Greg’s first to be safe and with his family.”
“And it was,” he caressed his son’s head. “He had quite a big night with all his cousins.”
Lily nodded, “I’m sure he’ll sleep all through the night.”
Lindsey’s blue eyes snapped to hers, “Are you saying…”
“Trick or treat, Lindsey?”
He smirked, “A bit of both....”
