November 1976

Chewing on her bottom lip, Lily read over her recipe once more. Everything seemed to be going smoothly. Lindsey’s mom had pretty much stayed out of the kitchen, something Lily attributed to him telling her that Lily wanted to handle it all on her own. As her first Thanksgiving… ever, it was a very big deal to her. And she really wanted to prove to Lindsey’s family that she was worthy of being a part of it. Deciding to host his mother, brothers, and their families in Los Angeles had been simple. Cooking however, was not going quite as well. Something was wrong and she could not figure it out.

“Baby?” Lindsey muttered softly after standing in the entrance to the kitchen for nearly ten minutes watching her. “Are you okay?”

She glanced over her shoulder at him and smiled slightly, “I think so.”

He entered the kitchen fully and kissed her softly, “You seemed worried.”

“I feel like I forgot something.”

“Hmmm. Let’s have a look,” he offered, stepping over to her cookbook.

Listening to him rattle off ingredients, she kept shaking her head. All of it was as it should be. Both of their ovens were full of food. Everything was –
“Oh fuck,” she muttered.

“What?” his blue eyes went to hers.

Lily jumped towards one of the ovens and pulled open the door, “Oh no.”

“Baby, what is it?”

Her bottom lip trembled.

His eyes glanced into the oven. Everything looked fine to him. The turkey filled the cavity of the oven and looked as… if it had not been cooking at all.

“The oven…”

Lindsey quickly reached forward and closed it. His fingers turned the dial on as tears began to run over Lily’s cheek. With the oven finally on, he turned to her and quickly embraced her. His lips quickly touched her cheeks, catching her tears, before he kissed her frown.

“It will be okay, Lil,” he stated softly.

“We were supposed to eat in an hour, Linds. The turkey…”

“We will just eat a little later. It’s fine, baby,” he assured her.

“But I wanted everything to be perfect and now I’ve done the worse thing imagineable: I forgot to turn on the oven when cooking the turkey. Thanksgiving is ruined!”

“Shhhh,” he kissed her again. “We’ll just eat a bit later. It’s not a big deal. We’ll refresh the appetizers and snacks and play a board game with the kids. It will be okay.”

“But Lindsey–”

“It will be okay. I promise.”

She sighed and nodded, “Okay.”

Blocking her from entering the kitchen, Lindsey wrapped his arms around Lily. Her eyes went to his and she smiled slightly. Nuzzling her nose, he kissed her lips softly. Lily smiled a bit more and wiggled into his embrace. He guided them out of the way for the dishes returning to the kitchen where his brothers and sisters-in-law cleaned up.

“It was amazing, Lil,” he commented softly.

“I’m sorry it was so la–”

“It was an honest mistake, love. No one faulted you at all. Besides you only lost an hour of cooking time,” he pointed out. “It was fine.”

“But–”

“It was fine,” Lindsey kissed her again. “Absolutely fine. I heard no complaints, baby.”

She sighed, “I wanted it all to be perfect.”

“Lily, it was.”

“But–”

“It was perfect, Lily. Absolutely perfect.”

Her eyes searched his and slowly she nodded, “It was pretty good, wasn’t it?”

“It was perfect,” he repeated before kissing her again. “Perfect.”

“I should help them–”

“No,” he interrupted. “Come sit in the living room with me.”

Holding his hand, Lily trailed behind him to the living room, glancing over her shoulder into her kitchen. Without warning, Lindsey pulled her into his lap as he sat down, nuzzling her before talking to the children. Settling in his embrace, she smiled slightly as one of the kids explained something to Lindsey. Slowly the adults returned to the living room.

“I have to admit, Lily, that was one of the best Thanksgiving meals we have ever had,” Lindsey’s eldest brother spoke up.

“Thanks, Jeff,” she smiled at him.

“It really was great,” Rutheda spoke up. “I am impressed.”

Her golden eyes went to the floor and she flushed, “Thank you.”

“So when are the two of you getting married?” Greg blurted out, causing his wife to slap his shoulder quickly and scold him.

“We haven’t known each other that long…” Lindsey pointed out awkwardly.

“We can all see that she’s perfect for y–”

“That’s enough, Gregory,” his mother declared. “Leave your brother alone.”

“But, Mom!”

“Enough,” she repeated.

“Okay…”

“What are your plans for Christmas, Lindsey? Will you be with the band?”

He glanced at Lily and smiled before returning his eyes to his mother, “We’ll be home. I promised Lily a real Christmas.”

“Splendid. Could I convince you the two of you to come home for Christmas?” she asked.

“It could happen,” Lindsey glanced at Lily again. “We’ll discuss it.”

“We would all love to see you, both of you,” she proclaimed. “You can stay at the house with me.”

“Thank you, Mom.”

“Greg, I think it’s time we head to bed,” his wife spoke up.

He looked over at his pregnant wife and instantly noticed the weariness in her eyes and nodded, “Okay.”

Lindsey watched as his brother led Daryl from the room up to the guest room they were staying. A few minutes later, Jeff and his young family left the living room. Rutheda remained a few minutes longer before also excusing herself. While he could feel Lily relaxing into near sleep, he did not want to interrupt their cuddling to take her upstairs. But they could not remain there all night.

“Baby? Lil?” he brushed his fingers across her forehead, drawing her eyes to him. “You want to go to bed?”

She nodded without leaning away from him. His lips touched her forehead before he nudged her to get up. After quickly checking all of the door locks and turning off the lights, Lindsey folded his hand over hers and headed up the stairs to their bedroom. He kissed her gently and slowly stripped her clothes off. Remaining silent, Lily pulled back the bedcovers and climbed into their large bed. After clicking off the bedroom light, Lindsey crawled into bed with her, wrapping his arms around her. They kissed lovingly, but the passion did not increase. Instead, she settled with her head on his chest.

“I’m really glad that everyone seemed to enjoy themselves,” she commented softly.

“It was a success, baby,” he kissed the top of her head.

“It was.”

“Do you want to spend Christmas with my mom?”

She nodded, “I do. I would like to… see what a real Christmas is like.”

Lindsey kissed her again, “Then we will have a real Christmas with my family in the Bay.”

Lily sighed, happily, “I love you, Lindsey.”

He smiled, “I love you too, Lil.”

“Thank you. Thank you for loving me and showing me so much goodness, Lindsey,” she whispered. “I’m so thankful for you.”

“And I you, my baby. And I you.”
