Even though it was not their first Valentine’s holiday together, there seemed to be so much hanging on this one. The band was not touring, so they did not have to worry about fitting romance into a tour schedule. There was the issue of scheduling around their nearly two year old daughter’s life, but Pete figured his mom would happily take care of Audrey if he asked. All of that he could work around. Seemingly, his biggest obstacle, one that seemed to cap every one of his ideas for gifts, was the fact she was approximately six months pregnant with their second child. He could not bestow just anything upon her and could not just whisk her away to some place romantic and exotic. Her moods could swing and that could backfire.

It was causing him much more stress than it should have.

Eventually, with some help from his friends and his mother, Pete settled on a gift and planned the night out. Audrey would stay with his mother for the night and he and Cady would go to the French restaurant they loved. It would be a sweet and simple holiday, not overly saccharine or sentimental – though the potential for that was there with her pregnant hormones. The benefit of this being their second child meant he pretty much knew her triggers and hoped he could avoid them that particular day.

Nevertheless, of course nothing ever went according to his plan.

Stepping out of his home studio, he headed up to check on Audrey. Finding the two-year-old sitting on her bed wide-awake, he scooped her out of the crib and tickled her lightly until she giggled. Plopping the little girl on his hip, he headed downstairs to find Cady. Hearing her and John’s voices, he skipped a couple of steps, joining them in the hallway.

“Get what sorted out?” he asked, shifting Audrey to his other hip.

Cady grinned, making his heart instantly skip, and replied, “Marlene just thinks something that isn’t true.”

“I don’t understand how your best friend could be so hot-headed, especially since she’s with this bloke who is anything but hot-headed.”

His wife reached for their daughter, “It’s just her nature, Pete.”

Glancing to his best mate he asked, “What did she get all upset about this time?”

“Don’t worry about it, mate,” he mumbled and headed away from the couple.

Watching as his wife followed his best friend, Pete too fell instep. He knew Marlene well enough at this point to know her flying off the handle was not necessarily that unexpected. He only wondered what John had or had not done at this point. At some point, he was going to sit down his best mate and discuss the finer qualities of handling women. Now did not seem to be the moment.

“Planting what ideas in my head?” Pete asked as he caught the last few words from his best friend before he pulled booze from the high cabinet.

Cady glanced at him, “Marlene wrongly thinks that the baby is John’s.”

John quickly downed his glass, refilled it, and handed it to Pete, “It’s not true, mate. I’ve never touched your wife.”

Pete looked at the glass for a long moment and accepted it, figuring this conversation would go much more smoothly if he had a buzz, “Why would she think that?”

“Because John hugged me and rubbed my belly for awhile,” she explained. “But you know he does that all the time.”

“And there may have been some flirting,” John added.

He quickly downed the glass, “Did you sleep with my wife?”

“Never,” John answered, holding his gaze steady. “Not once.”

“Have you ever wanted to sleep with me wife?” he fired off.

“Look at her, Pete!” he motioned to Cady.

Though he did not need to look at his wife to know she was beautiful and sexy, even heavy with his child, he glanced in her direction, “Question definitely still stands.”

“Wanting is not the same as doing,” John claimed.

Cady whispered, “You have?”

“You’re a very beautiful and sexy bird, Cady. You know you are. If you were not my best mate’s woman, yes, I would have made a move on you a long time ago. But you are, so that is not a line I would ever cross. For Pete’s and for our relationship’s sake. We’re best mates, but I love Marlene,” John explained evenly.

“What?”

He sighed, “Of course I’ve wan–”

“No, not that part. You love Marlene?” she asked.

“Yeah, I think I do.”

“Then what the hell are you doing here still? Go get in your bloody car and go after her,” Cady ordered. “Now.”

Watching his friend swallow another drink and pat him as he passed through the door, Pete tried to figure out how to process the quick interaction. His best friend wanted to sleep with his wife – but had not because of loyalty to him. While that was honorable and certainly the right response, Pete could not get over the fact his best friend wanted to fuck his wife.

He needed another drink. Though he could feel Cady’s eyes on him, Pete retrieved the glass from the sink, poured another whiskey, and drank it as fast as the other drink. While he was tempted to pour a third glass, he capped the bottle of liquor and returned it to the cupboard. Pressing both of his hands to the counter, he tried to settle his thoughts, his fingers tapping out some unknown rhythm on the tile. Cady remained standing silently behind him until Audrey began to fuss. Listening as she retreated from the kitchen, Pete took a deep breath.

“Wanting to and doing so are not the same thing,” he muttered. “I trust my wife. I trust my best mate. Wanting and doing are not the same thing.”

Taking another deep breath, he turned and headed out of the kitchen to find Cady and their daughter. It was little surprise to find her sitting in the rocking chair near the window, nursing Audrey. Her eyes focused out the window as she rocked slightly. The toddler fiddled with the necklace her mother wore, her blue eyes glancing up lovingly. Even with the growing child inside her, the nursing moment was just perfect. It nearly made him forget everything – but not quite.

“Cady?” he muttered softly, drawing both of the girls’ attention.

Guiding Audrey back to her breast, she motioned him over, “Yes, love.”

Pulling a chair next to her, he smiled as Audrey unlatched from her breast again and grinned at him before returning to her nursing, “I… I think we should talk about this.”

“There is nothing to talk about, Pete,” Cady responded, her eyes dropping down to the little girl, her fingers brushing her dark brown curls from her forehead.

“I… but he said he wanted to–”

“So? We haven’t and we won’t. There is nothing wrong with wanting as long as it remains just that,” she responded, meeting his eyes. “You’re my man. I know this. He knows this. I want no one but you.”

“But he has so much to offer you. He’s stable and–”

“Pete,” she warned.

“But–”

“Pete,” Cady interrupted, “not only have we gone over this before, but this time we’re married, have a beautiful daughter, and another child on the way. You have moved us into this lovely house and you truly are quite stable. I do not need anything different than what I have. We are perfect. We are love. Do not doubt anything.”

“I… I love you,” he leaned over and kissed her softly. “Can I take Audrey?”

Easing the girl out of her lap, she handed the young toddler over to her father and re-adjusted her shirt, “I’ll go get dinner started.”

Pete kissed her again before standing, adjusting the toddler to his hip, and holding out his hand to help Cady to her feet, “You are the most beautiful and radiant woman ever.”

She smiled crookedly, rubbing her belly some, “I’m not so sure about that, but then again I can’t see my feet now.”

Chuckling, he kissed her once more before turning to head back up to Audrey’s room for a diaper change. With a beautiful baby in his arms, a baby he created with Cady, Pete believed her words. He had nothing to worry about.

Biting her bottom lip, Cady hesitated leaving Audrey with Pete’s mother. It was not that she did not trust her mother-in-law with the baby. They had just never left Audrey with anyone overnight. It had been traumatic moving her into her own room after seven months of the crib sharing their room – which it still did when travelling on tour. Cady could not imagine not having her daughter in the house overnight. She could not leave her baby there. She just could not.

“Pete, I can’t–”

His mother instantly interrupted, “Why don’t you just go out to dinner alone? If you are still uncomfortable after dinner, you can come and pick her back up.”

Cady’s eyes flicked to the older woman and she nodded, “Thank you.”

Pete kissed his daughter’s head, “Be good for Grandmum.”

“Dada!” she reached for him.

“You’re going to stay here and have fun with Grandmum and all your uncles. Your mum and I will be back soon. Be good, little one,” he stepped out of her reach and quickly guided Cady to the door.

She hesitated as he opened the door. Looking over her shoulder, her eyes connected with her daughter’s and she nearly pulled out of Pete’s grasp. He tugged slightly, drawing her eyes to him. Seeing tears threatening, his eyes widened slightly. His lips quickly touched hers, hoping that simple gesture would be enough to stave off the crying.

“We’ll just go to dinner and then we’ll come right back for her,” Pete stated softly. “Like we’ve done dozens of times before.”

“Okay,” she muttered.

He kissed her again, “Everything will be just fine.”

They arrived at the French restaurant quickly and headed to a discreet table in the back. While normally Pete would pre-arrange their meal, Cady’s pregnant cravings were not something he wanted to challenge. Therefore, for the first time ever, they looked over the menu together, and made selections. Pete waved off wine suggestions by the waiter and slipped his arm around Cady’s shoulders. Smiling slightly, she laid her head on his shoulder, her fingers intertwining with his.

“I really appreciate this, Pete,” she uttered.

“But?”

Cady sighed, “But I really don’t think I can handle a night away from Audrey. I appreciate and understand the gesture but… what if she gets sick? Or has a nightmare? You know she can only get to sleep after those by nursing. Hell she pretty much will only sleep after nursing. I… I just don’t think I’m ready for that.”

“Sweetheart,” his thumb rubbed her knuckles, “relax, enjoy dinner, and we’ll decide on Audrey over dessert, okay?”

They never made it to dessert.

Midway through their meal, the table next to theirs received a boiled lobster. At first Cady did not notice it. Pete’s eyes glanced at the plated crustacean a moment before she spied it. The moment her eyes landed on the red creature, her silverware slammed onto her plate. Tears instantly spilled onto her cheeks and she began to mutter incoherently about the animal. Pete tried to distract her, to redirect her attention, but to no avail. Her tears would not stop.

“Okay, sweetie, come on,” he got to his feet and eased her coat onto her shoulders. “We’ll get away from here.”

“That was some lobster’s baby!” she muttered.

Pete had to bite his cheek to keep from laughing at her statement. Instead, he nodded solemnly, pulled a few bills out of his wallet, and quickly led her out of the restaurant. He embraced her, promising to never return to that restaurant, while waiting for the valet to fetch their car. Her sobs nearly ceased by the time the car pulled up next to the walk.

Easing her into the passenger seat, Pete softly declared, “I love you, Cadence Townshend. I love you.”

“I love you too, Pete,” she muttered, another tear rolling down her cheek. “But I want my baby home tonight.”

He kissed her forehead, “We’ll go get her right now, love. Promise.”

With Audrey nursed and tucked into her bed, Cady headed towards the bedroom she shared with Pete. While she did feel bad about ruining his planned romantic evening, the sight of the lobster on the plate still rocked her soul. Logically she knew it had everything to do with the fact she was pregnant, but that did not make it feel okay. Pete had done so much to pull it all together and she could not even last through dinner without breaking down. She felt horrible.

Stepping into the bedroom, Cady froze. The entire room was filled with warm candlelight. Red rose petals littered their bed and soft music played from some hidden speakers. Her lips parted, tears once more glittering in her eyes. She certainly had not been expecting this at all.

Lips touched her shoulder softly as hands appeared in front of her, holding a glittering necklace. She instantly recognized it as the one he had gifted her the Christmas before Audrey was born – but with a slight modification. Another heart dangled beside it, cut the same way, but clearly a glittering diamond. Her fingers covered it as he fastened the necklace about her throat.

“Pete…”

He kissed her shoulder again before his hands dropped down to rest upon her rounded belly, “Another heart for another child. He will be born in–”

“Is diamond April’s birthstone?” she asked softly.

He nodded, “Do you like it?”

Cady pulled away slightly to turn and kiss him, “I love it.”

His thumbs wiped tears from her cheeks. Normally it would bother him to see tears on her cheeks, but considering her state and the fact she had already shed many tears that day, he understood it did not necessarily mean anything bad. So he leaned in and kissed her once more.

“Happy Valentine’s Day,” he muttered softly.

“I… I don’t have anything for you, Pete. I feel bad,” she confessed.

He kissed her again, “I do not need some material bauble. You are giving me the greatest gift you can give: your love and another baby. Both of those are amazing gifts that I will never cease being grateful for.”

“But…”

His hand rubbed her belly, “You already give me more than I deserve. Worry not.”

Eyes holding his, Cady nodded. Pete’s lips softly touched hers, his hand leaving her belly to cup her face. Their kiss deepened and her arms tightened around him. While he had intended to romance her, Pete was not about to push and struggled to keep his hands from pulling off her clothes. Her fingers slid down his sides and pulled out his tucked in shirt. He smiled slightly into the kiss as her hands then moved to unbutton the shirt. Taking a step back, Pete shrugged the collared shirt off, watching as her fingers tugged on his plain, white undershirt as well. Standing very patiently, he allowed her to fully undress him, not reaching for her until he was completely nude.

Her lips went back to his as her fingers circled his cock. Slowly she began to stroke him as her tongue slipped between his lips. Pete’s hands slipped behind her back, tugging on the small zipper holding the loose dress closed. Pulling it apart, he waited for her to release him so he could slide the dress from her body. The black floral dress easily fluttered to the floor once she let her arms go down to her side. Pete’s gaze fixated upon her swelling belly for a long moment, a smile touching his lips. Even though he was utterly amazed they had once more created life, he could not deny he found her pregnant body very sexy.

Caressing her belly briefly, he leaned in for a kiss once more before his hands moved up to remove her nursing bra. Discarding the utilitarian garment, he leaned down, cupping and kissing her swollen breasts. She groaned as his tongue flicked her right nipple. Pulling back, Pete gently led her to their petal-covered bed. He froze as Cady crawled to the center, but did not turn around and lie back. His eyes focused on her rounded, heart-shaped ass. Instead of the cotton maternity panties she wore all the time now, a pair of dark red lacy panties barely covered her. Glancing over her shoulder, Cady wiggled a bit, drawing Pete’s eyes up briefly.

“Oh baby,” he groaned and crawled up onto the bed.

His hands roamed over her lacy derriere before sliding up her back. Leaning over her, Pete kissed up her spine, his hands running around her sides to cup her breasts. Cady turned her head to meet him in a kiss, pressing her body back towards his. He groaned as his erection rubbed against her lace. Kissing back down her spine, his fingers slipped under the waistband of her panties and he gently slipped them down. Easing her legs out of the garment, his gaze focused on them once more before he tossed them aside. His right hand slid down between her legs, gently caressing and teasing her open. A bit surprised to find her so wet, considering how emotional she had been that day, he eased two fingers into her. Cady moaned and shifted on the bed, pressing the side of her face to the blankets. Pete quickly leaned down to kiss her before pulling his fingers free and pushing into her.

Even though this was their second child, Pete always had a bit of anxiety when they commenced loving. He logically knew that it did not hurt the child growing inside of his wife, but it worried him all the same. Ever reading him, Cady softly assured him that it was okay, her gentle words encouraging his actions. Slowly he began to move in her, his own moans matching hers with every stroke.

While he did not mind loving her like that at all, Pete always preferred to look into her face when they orgasmed. He thrust deeply into her three more times before pulling out. Kissing the middle of her spine once, his hands slid to her hips and gently rolled her over. Gazing down at her lovingly, Pete believed the mother of his two children to be the most beautiful woman in the world. She was absolutely breathtaking. While his lips itched to kiss her, he instead shifted down the bed, settling between her legs. He kissed her pubic mound briefly, his fingers sliding easily into her wet body. Circling and sucking upon her swollen bud, he increased his fingers’ pace as the moans from her lips did as well. His tongue replaced his fingers for a few moments before he began to kiss up her body, showering copious kisses on her belly.

Meeting her mouth, Pete’s hands slipped under Cady’s hips and guided her up to unite with him. With his eyes focused on hers, he increased his pace, taking cues from her soft breaths. Her hands cupped her breasts, her toes pressing up to meet his thrusts. Quickly their crescendo increased, the rhythmic sound of their bodies meeting providing the counterpoint to their moans and sighs. Feeling her body tense, Pete eased her hips down and leaned in to kiss her. Her body’s pulse and throb about him quickly conducted him into joining her in ecstasy.

Slowly he rolled away from her, their hands clasping as their bodies and breaths calmed down. His thumb rubbed her knuckles and he glanced over at her. Meeting her blue eyes, Pete smiled, rolling onto his side. His other hand cupped her face and he kissed her softly.

“I love you, Cadence.”

“I love you, Peter. Forever.”
