Author's Notes: This is just a BRIEF series illustrating how Summer's parents got together.

Traveling to Minneapolis was always a big deal, but that summer it was a much bigger deal. His family stayed in the same motel, had the same plans. But nothing could have prepared him for those few days in the city. Nothing prepared Bobby to fall in love.

The very first day of the family vacation, his mother took all of the kids shopping. It was a sort of tradition to buy all of their school clothes and supplies on the trip. It was no different the summer of ‘58, except for the fact he had gotten bored more quickly and slipped away to wander the streets alone. Wandering for quite awhile, he browsed window displays and listened to a few street performers. As the day was hot and his pocket jingled with some money, Bobby headed into a soda shop. He hadn’t expected a soda to change his life. Oh but the moment he stepped in, bells jingling behind him as the door closed, everything changed. His intense eyes landed on a girl with light brown hair, warm brown eyes, and a glittering smile. Though she was surrounded by other pretty girls, Bobby knew she was something different, something special.

He quickly ordered a soda, his gaze flicking to the pretty brunette every few heartbeats. Though he had girlfriends before there was something clearly different about her. He had to play his cards carefully. Casually approaching the jukebox, which serendipitously was right next to her table, Bobby perused the selections. Ever certain she was watching him, Bobby dropped coin in the slot, pressed his selection, and waited to make certain the single played.

When the first two notes played successful, he approached her table. Taking a calming breath he set his soda down, eyes locking with hers.

“Would you... would you like to dance?”

“I would love to.”

A blond quickly slid out of the booth to allow Bobby’s interest out the red booth. The moment their hands touched, he knew she was the One. It didn’t matter he was still in school. She was it for him. He was going to marry that girl one day.

“I’m... Bobby Zimmerman,” he declared softly.

“Adele Davis,” she smiled.

“Pleasure to meet you, Miss Davis.”

“Please call me Adele.”

Leaving his family behind, Bobby headed down the street as the sun began to set. He did not need the light from street lamps, the way he felt inside was bright enough. It was his third evening with Adele and would be their first one alone. His heart fluttered like a nervous butterfly. He just knew they were going to kiss that night and he suspected she would taste as sweet as strawberries.

Arriving at their chosen street corner, Bobby glanced at his watch. He was a perfect five minutes early. Suddenly he wished for a gift for her, at least flowers. Looking around frantically he spied a nearby flower garden. Without a second thought, he quickly crossed the street. Picking half a dozen flowers, Bobby returned to their chosen meeting place. He only stood under the street lamp that flickered on suddenly for a minute before she arrived. His breath was completely taken away. Completely unbound her light brown hair curled about her shoulders in big waves. A solid pink dress dusted her curves, the straight skirt stopping just below her knees. She was absolutely beautiful.

“Hi,” she muttered.

“You look beautiful tonight,” he uttered before holding out the bunch of flowers. “So much so I believe these flowers will wild if you hold them too close.”

She flushed the same color as her dress as she accepted the small bouquet, “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Shall we head to the theater?”

“All right.”

The pair headed down the street silently. Bobby wanted to profess his affections to her but feared it would scare her off. If only he could hold her hand, his nerves would quiet. Seemingly reading his mind, Adele’s fingers reached for his. Oh how her touch was heaven.

Within moments of sitting in the dark theater Bobby forgot which movie they were to watch. He could smell her soft rose scent, could practically feel her pulse in the palm that still touched his. She spoke softly about her family and growing up in Minneapolis before the opening credits for A Long Hot Summer started. Every word she spoke was golden, but her touch was platinum. As the film began to roll Bobby started to search for the opportunity to slip his arm around her shoulders. But finding that moment was difficult while holding her hand. Adele quickly solved the issue by releasing his hand after guiding his arm behind her. The night was going very well.

When the couple kissed on screen near the end of the movie, Bobby turned to Adele for her reaction. Surprisingly she was looking at him expectantly. Before he could even lean forward she pressed her lips to his. It was simple and cute and ever so perfect. Bobby wanted to kiss her forever. But the lights lit up the theater and the couple pulled apart.

“Bobby...”

He smiled, “Let’s walk for awhile.”

The young couple left the theater, Bobby’s arm around her shoulders again. They chatted softly, their conversation slowly moving away from their pasts to their presents. He knew she was in high school but cared little for classwork. She knew he liked R&B music and played guitar. Most importantly neither spoke of a boyfriend or girlfriend.

Reaching a nearby park, Bobby lead Adele to a park bench. His arm slipped right back around her shoulders. They chatted once more about trivial things but not for long. Her words trailed off at the end of sentence, her eyes going to his.

“Adele, you are so beautiful,” he muttered, reaching up to caress her cheek.

Flushing slightly, she smiled, “Bobby, do you believe in fate?”

“Not until I met you.”

Her smile increased, “I...”

Leaning forward, his thumb caressed her pouty bottom lip briefly, seemingly testing it. Her eyes fluttered close, everything about her aura beckoning him in. Smiling briefly Bobby closed his eyes and leaned forward until their noses bumped and then their lips touched. He held it only for a brief moment, but long enough to feel every cell in his body explode with life.

“Adele,” he muttered, caressing her cheek.

“Oh Bobby,” she responded, threw her arms around his neck, and pulled him back to kiss her. “Kiss me again. Kiss me forever.”
