With their parents in New Orleans for the weekend, celebrating their sixteenth wedding anniversary, Will and Evie were on their own for the first time… ever. Hayley had been asked to stay at the house, but even though she agreed to it, she worked most of the day and late into the night. Not that the seventeen-year-old boy minded. In fact, he was looking forward to impressing their parents with how responsible he had been in their absence — which was probably not what most teenagers thought. Regardless, he wanted to do right by his parents and Evie.

Yet he really did not have any great idea as to how to entertain the five-year-old; until someone mentioned Disneyland the previous evening.

Woken before dawn by his younger sister, Will showered and dressed, letting the girl dress herself. He was not the least bit surprised she skipped out of her bedroom wearing a denim jumper with Belle’s pink rose embroidered on the front pocket and yellow ruffles reminiscent of her ball gown. This she had pulled over a teal green shirt with Jasmine’s face emblazoned on it; the Arabian princess’s eyes just barely peeked over the top of the bib of the jumper. Her outfit was completed with her pink sparkly shoes accessorized with a ribbon and a medallion with the princesses’ faces on it.

Looking over her while he tied the laces on his shoes, Will chuckled, “Couldn’t you just be one princess, Evie?”

“What?” her big brown eyes went to his.

“Nevermind,” he smiled, standing up. “Ready to go have breakfast with Mickey and Minnie?”

“Yeah!” she jumped up and down, clapping.

“Come on, kiddo. Let’s hit the road.”

Just over an hour later, Will parked the family car and headed up to the gates with his little sister. They presented their passes at the turnstiles and headed into the park, approximately half an hour before the park opened to the general public. Evie giggled and tugged on his hand, trying to get him to sprint to the Plaza Inn for their breakfast.

“Hurry up, Will!” she whined, pulling harder.

They spent nearly an hour in the restaurant with the characters. Will had to basically plead with the young girl to eat her Mickey Mouse waffles, promising she would not miss the opportunity to talk with all the characters. With nearly three dozen pictures snapped, he finally managed to usher her out of The Plaza Inn.

Not a dozen steps out of the pink building, Evie began to excitedly pull Will in a million directions. He chuckled, but dutifully followed. He had no idea how his parents managed this, especially with more than one child to take care of. At least there was a big enough gap between him and Evie that they did not have to juggle more than one small child at a time. He could only imagine how stressed they must have been when visiting Disneyland when he, Hayley, and Jamie were younger.

“I wanna go in the castle, Will!” she declared.

“Okay, okay. Let’s go find the entrance so we can walk through it,” he guided her to the side. “What are we doing afterwards?”

“Snow White!” she squealed.

“Isn’t that one kinda scary?” he asked.

“Don’t worry, Will. I’ll protect you.”

Dragging his feet after a dozen rides, character interactions, and little girl squeals, Will paused to pick up Evie and set her upon his shoulders. Smiling, she folded her hands on top of his head as he weaved through the crowds to find a decent location to stand for the parade.

Will hesitated a moment before handing her an ice cream bar, thinking it probably was not a good idea to let the little girl eat ice cream while on top of him. This was proved the case a few minutes later when he felt a cold trickle down his neck. Admonishing her, he handed her a napkin, before laughing at her sloppy attempt at wiping up the ice cream.

Figuring he would have to live with a sticky neck until they got home, he directed her attention to the parade. The young girl clapped and cheered as each dancing section passed them by. She giggled and squealed when the characters waved or even reached up to shake her hand.

Once the last of the dancing characters passed them, Will pulled her off his shoulders and asked, “What now, brown cow?”

“I’m hungry, Will,” she whined.

He smirked, “Well it is dinnertime. How about we get something and then head home?”

“But I wanna watch the fireworks!” she declared.

“Okay, okay. Let’s get dinner and then find a good place for fireworks. Sound good to you?”

“Uh huh.”

He held out his hand to her, “So what do you want for dinner, Princess?”

“Hot dogs!”

Shaking his head, “We already had corn dogs for lunch, silly pants. How about some… chicken?”

“Hmmm… okay.”

Nodding, he guided her through and out of the crowd. Before long they were settled at a table at the Hungry Bear Restaurant. She happily chewed on chicken tenders while he burped through a chili cheeseburger, making her giggle and make faces at him. The young girl slowly played with the food on her plate, giving him the chance to dig out his cell phone.

Noticing he missed a call from their mother over an hour earlier, Will quickly called Summer’s cell phone back, “Hey, Mom.”

Hi. Where are you? Why didn’t you answer earlier? Why isn’t anyone answering the house phone?

“Relax,” he chuckled uneasily. “Evie and I are at Disneyland. I guess Hayley isn’t at the house.”

You took Evie to Disneyland?

“Yep. We’re having a blast. After dinner we’ll watch Tink start the fireworks then head home,” he explained. “You want to talk to her?”

“Yes.”

With a smile, he told Evie to wipe her hands off and handed over the phone. The young girl chatted with Summer and then Cameron for a few minutes, bubbling about all the fun things they had done all day. After proclaiming she loved them, she handed the phone back to Will and returned to her dinner.

Good job, son,” Cameron instantly said. “Pretty sure you’re your sister’s hero now.”

“Just wanted her to have fun.”

Well you accomplished that,” he responded. “We’ll be home really late tomorrow. Make sure she’s in bed in time for school?

“Yeah, sure.”

Great. Have fun at the fireworks.

“Uh, thanks. You too,” he replied. “Bye.”

The siblings departed for prime fireworks seats a few minutes later. Evie delighted in the light-up princess tiara Will purchased to distract her until Tinkerbell’s appearance. Once the finale lit up the sky, rather than head back to the Rivers of America for the night show, Will once more deposited his sister on top of his shoulders and joined the throngs of people leaving the park. He slipped her off his shoulders before climbing onto the tram to the parking structure. Leaning against her older brother, Evie dozed off before they reached the tram’s final stop. Though he would have carried her to the car, Will shook her awake to get her out of the tram and stumbling towards the parking garage. He knew without a doubt he would have to carry her from the car to her bedroom once they reached the house.

When he returned to their house late that night, Hayley’s car was parked in the driveway. Will briefly considered asking for her assistance getting the youngest sibling into the house and into her bed. Rather than leave Evie sleeping in the car while searching out his older sister, he slipped his hands under her and carefully lifted her from the car and carried her into the house.

Hayley met him inside the house, “Looks like it was a good day.”

“Yeah,” he responded softly. “I’ll get her upstairs but maybe you can get her into her PJs?”

“Yeah, sure. Mom left like five messages on the house phone,” she trailed after her brother.

“We talked to her.”

“Oh good. Jamie called to check in too, but I actually talked to him.”

“Okay,” he turned sideways to carry Evie into her room. “I’m going to take a shower. She spilled ice cream down my shirt.”

“Do I even want to know?”

He shrugged, easing the young girl onto her bed, “You should have come with us.”

“I had work to do.”

“Right,” his brown eyes met hers. “Evie misses hanging out with you too, Hayley.”

“You don’t need to guilt me too, Will. I get it enough from Mom and Dad,” she stated, pulling the girl’s pajamas from her dresser.

“Well then maybe you should make an effort.”

“Go take your shower,” she waved him off.

“Yeah, nice to see you too,” he frowned and headed towards the door.

“Hayley?” Evie muttered once her older sister pulled off her shirt.

“Yeah, Evie?”

“Can you go with us next time?”

She sighed, pulling the nightgown over the girl’s messy hair, “I’ll try, Evie. I’ll try.”
