Summary: Summer is back in San Diego and spends alone time with Cameron.  Jamie catches a cold.

Rocking gently in the hammock, Summer stared up at the sky.  It was a pleasant, though cool day.  She did not mind the slightly cool breeze or even the threat of rain.  It felt good to be back in San Diego.  While she had mostly enjoyed the holidays in Malibu with her family, the addition of so many kids and Jimmy certainly made it far more stressful than it should have been.  Maybe she should have remained in San Diego, decorated a tree with Cameron, and had a quiet holiday with her son.

Instead, she had gone to Los Angeles and could not wait to come back to San Diego, back to school.  A week after returning, she had deflected stories of her holidays enough the high schoolers gave up asking.  Add a fantastic New Years kiss with Cameron and no one even cared about Christmas any more.  Two days into classes again and even that was a thing of the past.  Sometimes, she loved how fast high school seemed to go. Sometimes, she wished it would last forever.

“Hey, you,” a soft, very familiar voice interrupted her thoughts.

Her eyes fluttered open, “Cameron.”

He leaned down and carefully kissed her, “Hi, beautiful.  What are you doing out here?”

“Escaping,” she responded.

“From?” his fingers gently brushed her hair from her face.

“Everything,” she closed her eyes, focusing her attention on his gentle touch.

“Why’s that, pretty girl?”

“It’s a long story.”

“I have time.”

“Well don’t stand over me like this,” her eyes opened and she smiled crookedly.

“What would you have me do?” Cameron asked.

She shifted carefully over in the hammock without tipping it over.  Smirking, Cameron slipped onto the hammock, almost dumping both of them out twice.  Giggling, Summer turned on her side and cuddled against him once he was settled.  He held her close as she began to spill the details of the visit to Los Angeles.  She felt his unspoken reactions, his body tensing when she spoke of Jimmy.

“And now… where is he now?”

“I don’t know.  He left the day after Christmas, saying he was going to make things better for us.  I haven’t heard from him since,” she responded.

“Do you think… do you think he’ll show up here?” he asked softly.

Summer shook her head, “I don’t, but I did not expect him in LA either.”

“His son is here.  He might—”

“Jimmy held Jamie once.  Then he dirtied his diaper and was passed off to my mom.  He never once paid any attention to his son again,” she declared.

“You’re shitting me.”

“Nope.  Cared not for his son.  Tried to force me into sex, but couldn’t get it up.  I…”

Cameron’s arms tightened around her, “I’m sorry Christmas was nothing how you wanted.”

“I should have stayed here with you.  I’m only happy when I’m with you.”

His lips touched her temple, “I’m happiest with you, too.”

“When you kissed me at the New Year’s party…”

Cameron turned her face towards him and kissed her lips gently, “Yes?”

“It was so perfect.”

He smiled and kissed her again, feeling cool rain begin to splash on their skin, “We should go inside.”

Summer turned her face up to the clouds, “Just a bit longer, Cameron.”

Cuddling her for a few minutes out in the rain, Cameron thought over her Christmas stories.  He had a feeling during it that things were not quite right.  Phone calls had been short and not nearly as frequent as he expected.  When she returned, it felt as if she was avoiding him, at least until the New Year’s party.  Now he understood — only he was not entirely sure that he did.  Jimmy was making some attempt to reassert himself into Summer’s life, but was seemingly failing.  Nothing felt quite right.

“Summer?”

“We should go inside before we get cold,” she declared, carefully pulling away from him and getting up without tipping the hammock.

Nodding, he rolled out of the hammock and took her outstretched hand.  Summer took a couple of steps towards the house before he squeezed her hand and stopped.  Turning back to him, concerned he would stop, her eyes went to his.  Not saying a word, Cameron leaned down and kissed her gently.  Smiling, she pecked his lips once more before turning back to the house.

After eating dinner with her mother and son, and taking care to bathe Jamie afterwards, Summer and Cameron curled up on the couch together.  Jamie played happily on the floor with his Christmas toys, while the pair watched a movie.  As the ending credits scrolled up the screen, Cameron glanced down at the little boy.  Nudging Summer, he motioned at Jamie.  The little boy had fallen asleep while playing, using one of his plush dinosaurs as a sort of pillow.

Grinning, Cameron carefully pulled away from Summer and approached the one-year-old boy.  Slowly he squatted next to the infant, slipped his hands under him, and lifted him up from his blanket.  He rolled the boy onto his chest, smiling as Jamie cooed but remained sleeping.  He carried Jamie over to Summer, allowing her to kiss her son’s head before heading down the hallway to his room.

Summer remained on the couch, her feet tucked up underneath her, while Cameron put her son to bed.  It made her soul feel as if it was filled with sunshine.  Even though Jamie was not his son, Cameron cared for him like a father would, or should.  She felt so very lucky to have him in their lives.

Returning to the living room a few minutes later, Cameron leaned over the back of the couch and kissed her upside down, “I should go.”

“No, please stay.”

“But we have school tomorrow…”

Her fingers reached up, grabbing his, “Please stay.”

Moving around the couch without letting go of her hand, Cameron sat back down.  Grinning, Summer pulled her hand free and cuddled up against him.  He tucked her hair behind her ears again and kissed her gently.  She rested her cheek against his shoulder and crossed her leg over his.  Keeping one arm around her shoulders, his other hand dropped down upon her leg, gently rubbing her thigh.

“You’re so good with Jamie,” she commented softly.

He smiled, “He’s a good kid.”

Her hand covered his on her thigh, squeezing it gently, “I’m so glad he has you.  I’m so glad I have you.”

“I’m not going anywhere, Summer.  Ever.”

She leaned up and over and kissed him gently.  Her lips parted, letting Cameron take the lead.  Turning slightly towards her, his tongue slipped into her mouth, tentatively playing with hers.  His fingers gently caressed her thigh.  Her hand slipped over onto his thigh, gently rubbing it.

“Summer,” he muttered against her mouth.

Without saying anything, she pivoted and straddled his lap.  Cameron groaned softly, his hands settling on her hips as she leaned in to kiss him again.  Ever so slightly she grinded against him, deepening their kiss.  His hands slipped from her hips and squeezed her buttcheeks.  Inadvertently his actions pressed her closer to him.

She moaned, “Cam, you’re…”

He flushed and tried to put space between them, “I’m sorry…”

“Don’t be,” she muttered and kissed him again, her hand snaking down his chest.

“Summer, what are you…”

He gasped as her hand groped his crotch.  Her lips showered kisses across his face as she began to massage him.  Letting her rub him for a moment, Cameron suddenly reached down and pulled her hand up.  He placed it on his shoulder, but did not stop her when she shifted forward and began to grind against him again.  Instead, he reached between and cupped her right breast gently, making her gasp in the middle of kissing his neck.

“Cameron,” she whispered, her voice heavy with desire, “I want…”

“Yes?”

Her hands surrounded his face and she looked into his eyes, “You.”

He groaned, “Summer…”

Her lips touched his, “Come with me.”

Swallowing audibly, he nodded and watched as she climbed out of his lap.  He struggled to get up, his arousal straining against jeans.  She kissed him once he stood, grabbed his hand, and headed out of the living room, turning off lights on their way.  Closing the door behind Cameron, Summer quickly embraced him, pushing him back against the door.  Her mouth happily kissed his while her fingers went to his belt.  As she stepped back to push his pants down pass his hips, Cameron reached for the bottom hem of her shirt.  Summer chewed on her bottom lip slightly as he peeled her shirt over her head.

“Oh, Summer,” he groaned, looking down at her breasts.

“You can… touch them if you want.”

His eyes flicked to hers briefly before he reached up and cupped her bare breasts.  She moaned and shivered, her eyes closing as his thumbs traced circles around her nipples.  They quickly swelled into hard, rosy peaks.  Her fingers slid over his shoulders, gripping his cotton tee shirt.

“Summer,” he whispered, “you’re so beautiful.”

She blushed slightly, “Cameron…”

His lips touched hers, “So beautiful.

As the kiss ended, Summer pulled his tee shirt off.  Her fingers ran down his chest, tracing the lines of his body, tickling the top of his treasure trail.  She stopped at the waistband, caressed around his waist to his sides, and gently ran her fingertips back up to his shoulders while he continued to squeeze and roll her nipples.  Carefully, Cameron released her breasts, running his hands down to her jeans.  She took a step backwards, her gaze dropping down to watch him unfasten her pants.  He groaned, looking down as he exposed her dark blonde curls.

“Summer…” his fingers gently brushed over the curls.

Her eyes closed, her hands going to his shoulders and squeezing gently, “Yes…?”

“You are so…” his mouth kissed hers deeply. “Sexy.”

Keeping one hand on his shoulder, her fingers traced down his chest and slipped into his boxers.  He gasped as she groped him; her touch quickly bringing him to full arousal.  Before he could object, she quickly kneeled and pulled his shorts down.  Holding his cock with both hands, she licked the tip gently.  His eyes rolled as they closed briefly.  He gasped and groaned as her lips slid over his crown.  Her tongue slowly swirled around his tip, gently tickling his tip.

Before she could sink any further down on his cock, though he loved how he felt in her mouth, Cameron reached down and pulled her up off her knees.  His lips touched hers before urging her to step away from the door.  They stumbled slightly; their feet catching in their jeans.  Cameron chuckled nervously, resisting following her to her bed.

Summer turned to face him, kissed him softly, and gently groped him, “Cameron… it’s okay.”

“Summer, we…”

Her lips touched his again, “Cameron, I love you.”

His breath caught and his eyes widened.  Summer stood before him, the dimmest of light sneaking between the cracks in her blinds.  Silvery strands of lights cast stripes over her body, highlighting the slight curves of her body.  Naked as she was, he could definitely tell she was no teenager.  From the dark blonde curls of her sex to the slight round of her belly that grew a baby over a year ago to her plump yet still perky breasts, her body was all woman.  She was quite possibly the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.  His fingers disappeared into her blonde hair and he leaned down to kiss her, his lips touching hers ever so softly.

His dark eyes looked into hers, searching out the feelings in her heart.  As her blue eyes looked up into his, a small smile curving her lips, he realized in that very moment she was not only physically exposed to him, but her soul was naked as well.  In that moment, they were the only two people in the entire universe.

“I love you too,” he muttered softly before leaning down and kissing her.

Still kissing her, Cameron gently stepped forward, making Summer back up.  The back of her knees hit the bed.  With his arms still around her, he tumbled onto the bed with her.  He barely managed to put his hands out to catch himself before falling on top of her with his entire weight.  His eyes looked down at her, trying to make certain it was okay.

Her fingers reached up, pushing back his hair.  She leaned up slightly to kiss his mouth, her lips signaling to him to continue.  Ever so gently, he pushed her back onto the bed.  His tongue slipped passed her cherry lips, rolling around in her mouth.  She sucked on his tongue, her body arching towards his as his fingers traced down her body.  He cupped her breasts, gently massaging them as she wiggled and traced her short nails over his upper arms.  His right hand slipped down her stomach, tracing circles around her navel before caressing lower, disappearing into her dark curls.  He rubbed her pubic mound, making her moan and arch towards him.  As her hips lifted from the bed, Cameron’s fingers slipped into dewy sex.

“Cameron,” she moaned, parting her legs further for him to comfortably position himself.

“Yes, sweetheart,” he kissed her again, dipping his middle finger into her wet entrance.

“Love me,” she requested softly. “Love me.”

His lips touched hers and he muttered against her lips, “I already do, Summer.”

Her fingers wrapped gently around his cock, guiding him towards her.  He pushed forward slightly, stopping as his tip touched her outer petals.  He withdrew his hand and pressed up onto both of his elbows.  Both of their eyes glanced down as Summer rubbed his tip up and down her oozing slit, smearing his precum on her sex.  She bit her bottom lip as she lined him up, her fingers loosening her hold on him.  Both remained focused down as he pushed forward, his tip parting her petals.

Summer gasped, her fingers tightening on him.  His eyes instantly went to hers, worry and concern shining on his face.  He pulled back, withdrawing his tip from her entrance.  Figuring her resistance meant something more, he kissed her gently before attempting to pull away fully.

“No,” Summer whined.

Cameron stopped, “But…”

“I haven’t…” she muttered.

He kissed her, “What, sweetie?”

“I haven’t made love in over a year, Cameron,” she admitted. “… since long before Jamie was born.”

“We don’t have t—”

“I want to!” she interrupted and guided his hand down to her sex. “You’re just so… big.”

His fingers began to stroke her, “But you’ve had…”

She moaned softly, wiggling towards his fingers as his middle one dipped into her, “Not like you, Cameron.  Not like you.”

Cameron kissed her again, his cheeks flushed, “What should I…”

“Keep touching me,” she groaned, closing her eyes.

His lips touched hers once more before he pulled away.  He stood up and pulled her back up as well.  Without saying a word, Cameron pulled the blankets back and guided her to lie back down.  Once she was comfortably situated, he crawled between her legs and knelt.  He carefully pressed her legs further apart, his hands gently rubbing and caressing her inner thighs.  Slowly his caress neared her sex.  One hand reached up to cup her breast, the other cupped her sex, massaging gently.  He slipped his middle finger into her, carefully prodding and wiggling.  She moaned, her hips wiggling slightly underneath him.

Feeling her honey begin to coat his finger, Cameron slowly moved it in and out of her.  She gasped and her fingers dug into the pillow under her head.  His hand left her breast and he reached down to rub her clitoris in concert with his slow fingering.  Glancing up at her face, he leaned down and kissed her sex.  Her sudden gasp made his head snap up.

“Did I…”

Her hands left the pillow and messed his hair before gently pressing him down, “Feels good.”

Smiling, Cameron leaned back down and kissed her again, letting his tongue slip between her petals slightly.  She moaned again, her fingers tightening in his hair.  His finger continued to move in and out of her sex, pulling more honey from her honey pot with each little thrust.  His tongue slipped out from between his lips, running a circle around her clitoris while he added a second finger.  She groaned, arching up to him.

With her fingers still clutching his hair, Summer pulled his mouth back up to hers.  She kissed him deeply, released his hair, and reached for his hands.  Fingers threading with hers, Cameron kissed up her body, pausing to kiss each breast once before finally meeting her mouth again.  They kissed deeply while he rubbed his erection against her hot sex.

Hands still clasped, Summer reached down with him.  Both of their fingers wrapped around his cock, rubbing it up and down between her petals again.  Thoroughly coated with her natural lubricant, they stopped once his tip once more aligned with her entrance.  Cameron’s hand pulled free and cupped her face, holding her as he kissed her.  Her fingers loosened around his erection, allowing him movement.  His eyes held hers as he slowly pushed forward.

She gasped, feeling him stretch her slightly, “Cam…”

He showered kisses on her face, “Do you want me to stop?”

“No…” she whispered. “Just go slow.”

Kissing her again, he pressed forward.  With her hand still loosely wrapped around him, he barely entered her.    Pulling his other hand free from hers, Cameron pushed up on his elbows, allowing them to look down once more.  Slowly her hand pulled away, both moving to loosely grip his forearms.  With great restraint, he gently pushed forward.  A deep moan left his lips as he felt her tight body stretch to accommodate him.

“Oh, baby,” he muttered, still slowly entering her, “you’re so tight.”

She moaned and arched towards him, her actions pulling him fully into her, “Ohhhhh.”

Fully buried in her, Cameron kissed her mouth again, “Summer…”

“Yessssss, Cameron.  Yesss,” her fingers tightened on his arms.

Eyes locked with hers, he slowly began to move.  Her legs parted more, her body squeezing his tightly.  He leaned down and kissed her throat, feeling her pounding pulse against his mouth.  She moaned and sighed, hooking one leg around his waist to keep him from pulling out too far.  Cameron pressed his forehead into the pillow her head rested on, his soft moans filling her ear.

His thrusts slowly began to speed up.  Hearing her moans become softer, he pressed up onto his knees, leaning up from her.  His hands went to her hips, his fingertips pressing into her flesh.  As their eyes locked and her hands covered her breasts, a deep moan passed Summer’s lips.  She bit her bottom lip, trying to muffle her moans, even though her bed squeaked with each thrust.  His fingers tightened and he thrust faster.

Summer bit her lip harder, squeezing her eyes closed as her body tensed.  Unable to hold back any longer, Cameron grunted and thrust deep into her.  He collapsed down upon her, his orgasm shooting deep into her.  His lips touched her sweaty brow as his cock softened inside of her.

“You are so…” he muttered and kissed her mouth.

Her arms circled his neck, deepening the kiss, “I love you, Cameron.”

“I love you, too, Summer.  That was…”

“Yeah,” she smiled, kissing him again. “And you’re still in me.”

He flushed and tried to pull away from her, “Oh, I’m sorry.”

Summer wrapped her other leg around him, keeping him close, “No, don’t.”

Cameron kissed her again, “Did you… did you have an orgasm?”

She held him close, nodding slightly even if it was not true, “Stay here… all night.”

Saying nothing, he carefully rolled them onto their sides and reached for the blankets.  Still half-erect and very much buried in her, Cameron kept her in his arms.  While he had often dreamt of making love to her, he had never once thought it would actually happen.  But it had.  And he never wanted to let her go.  Ever.

Sitting on the sofa with Jamie fussing in her arms, Summer softly began to sing.  He continued to wiggle and cry in her arms, his forehead burning up.  Despite her mother’s declarations, she was certain his illness was her fault.  If she had been more attentive to him while at the mall with Cameron a couple of days before, perhaps Jamie would not have stuck the found plastic spoon in his mouth.  If she had been a better mother, he would not have chewed and slobbered on the handle at the grocery store the day before.  If she had spent more time with him instead of worrying about impressing the girls at school, he would not be so ill.  It was her fault, no matter what she was told.  She knew it — and had not attended school the past two days because of it.

Let in by Adele a few minutes before, Cameron entered the living room with a bottle in hand.  He paused for a moment, listening as Summer sang to her son.  He could tell how worried she was, even with her mother’s assurances that Jamie would be fine.  Without even a thought, he knew he needed to be strong and supportive for Summer.  Silently, he sat beside her, waiting out her song.

“Hey there, big guy,” he spoke softly, offering the bottle to the infant.

Still fussing and wiggling in Summer’s arms, Jamie scowled at Cameron, but accepted the bottle.  He pulled it in close and began to suck, his big blue eyes focused on his godfather.  Summer adjusted how she held him, her fingers touching his skin.  She frowned, her eyes glancing up at Cameron.

“Cam… I’m such a bad mo—”

“Not at all, sweetie,” he instantly interrupted, reaching over and caressing her cheek. “You do not have it in you to be a bad mom, Summer.”

“But if I hadn’t been spending all my time worrying at school—”

“Summer, sweetheart, lots of moms work and leave their children with caretakers.  Hell they’re apart from their children longer than you are from Jamie,” he pointed out. “You spend six, maybe seven hours away from him, during which he’s with your mom.  You give him an amazing life, sweetheart.  He is not lacking.”

“But—”

“You’re a good mom, Summer.  You are,” Cameron declared definitively.

She frowned, looking down at her son.  As he suckled on the bottle of juice, he mumbled, in part in pleasure, in part because his nose was all stuffy.  Her fingers gently brushed his dark curls away from damp forehead, her frown deepening.

“Cam…”

Noticing the worried look on her face, he held open his hands for the baby.  With a sigh, she handed her son over.  Cameron adjusted how he supported the child and made faces at him.  Staring up at his godfather, the boy’s blue eyes brightened.  He spit out the bottle and giggled.

“There we go,” he smiled down at the boy in his lap. “That’s my boy.”

Summer picked up the mostly empty bottle, “You’re so good with him.”

“He makes it easy,” Cameron claimed, leaning down and kissing the boy’s forehead. “He is burning up, Summer.”

“I know…” she frowned again. “I don’t know what else to do.”

“Why don’t we,” he slowly stood with the child still in his arms, “give him a bath and then maybe he’ll be ready to sleep?”

Nodding, Summer stood up and followed him down the hallway.  Adele watched from her bedroom, smiling as the two headed to take care of the baby, before turning back to her packing.  Kneeling with Cameron next to the bathtub, Summer helped bathe her son.  The child played some, but for the most part sat in the hot water, letting the two adults take care of him.  When Cameron flipped up the drain, Jamie instantly reached for his mother.  Not caring about grabbing a towel, Summer lifted him out of the water, holding him close, letting her cotton shirt soak up his wetness.  Cameron patted him down with a towel, tucking it under Summer’s hands.  Without pause, he followed her into Jamie’s room, helped diaper and dress the baby, and gave him a kiss before she laid Jamie down in his bed.

With his hand on her lower back, he followed her into her room, instead of back into the living room, “Summer, you should try to rest too.  I’m guessing you haven’t slept at all.”

“But…”

Cameron sat on her bed, opening his arms.  Without pause, she slipped onto his lap, burying her face on his shoulder.  Folding his arms around her, he laid back, taking her with him.  Smiling slightly, Summer re-adjusted her position, remaining curled up on top of him.  He kissed her forehead gently.

“This isn’t your fault, Summer,” he stated. “Kids get sick.”

“But if I were—”

“Summer, stop beating yourself up.  Kids get sick.  We all get sick,” he declared.

She sighed, “I’m just… Robert lost Karac…”

He squeezed her tightly, “It’s not going to happen.  He just has a little cold.  He’s going to be just fine.  You’ll see.”

“But…”

“He’ll get some sleep and then you’ll see.”

She sighed again, but said nothing more.  His hands rubbed her back, letting her know with a touch that he was there for her.  Wiggling on him, she rubbed her cheek against his shoulder and kissed his ear softly.  He smiled and hugged her again.

“He’s going to be okay.  I promise,” Cameron vowed softly.

“I believe you.”

He squeezed her again, “Good.  You should. Because it’s the truth.  And do you know how I know it’s the truth?”

“How?”

“Because there’s something else that’s true.”

“What?”

His fingers touched her chin, tilted her face towards his so he could kiss her lips gently, “I love you.”

Her eyes brightened and she smiled, “I love you, too, Cam.”

His lips touched hers again, “Close your eyes, Mommy.  Get some rest.”

Nodding, she closed her eyes, remaining cuddled with him.  He smiled as her body relaxed finally.  His fingers brushed her hair from her face and he kissed her forehead.  Even though he was not entirely in the most comfortable of positions, lying crosswise on her bed, his feet planted on the floor as if he was sitting, Cameron did not care, nor did he make any effort to move.  He would stay with Summer, just as he was, as long as she needed him.

Summer slept for three hours curled against Cameron like that.  He thought she was going to sleep the night through, but she woke with a sudden start.  Before he could ask her anything, she climbed off of him and hurried from the room.  Two seconds later, he heard what she did: Jamie crying.  Shaking feeling back into his legs, he stood up and headed to the boy’s bedroom as Summer lifted him from his bed.  Her lips touched his forehead as she hushed him.

“Summer?” he spoke softly as he stepped into the room.

Turning with a smile on her face, she responded, “His fever… it’s gone.”

He approached the two and kissed the boy’s forehead as well, “Seems like it.”

After changing the child’s diaper and tucking him back into bed, Summer left the room with Cameron.  Her eyes glanced at her mother’s room, noticing the door was closed.  Cameron pointed out that it was near midnight and Adele had gone to bed a couple of hours earlier.

“You should probably get going then…”

He stopped in the hallway outside her bedroom and kissed her softly, “It’s Friday.  I have nowhere to be tomorrow.”

“So you’ll stay?” she asked, her voice filled with hope.

Nodding, he kissed her again, “If you’d like that, yes.”

“Please…”

Taking her hand, Cameron returned to her bedroom with her.  Summer left the door cracked, just as she had Jamie’s, just in case her son called for her again.  They both stripped down for bed, he remaining in his boxers, she in her tee shirt.  As she bent over to peel the blankets back, his gaze dropped to the hem of her shirt.  He gasped, his eyes on the naked curve of her ass.

“Summer…”

She glanced over her shoulder.  Her eyes went from his down to his tented boxers.  Turning around, she sat down on the bed and motioned him closer.  Hesitating briefly, Cameron stepped up to the bed, looking down at her.  Her fingers reached out, rubbing him gently.  He groaned and closed his eyes.  She continued to rub him, feeling him thicken more under her touch.  Increasing her pace, she smiled as he moaned slightly, his hands reaching for her.  Pushing his hands away, she pulled his shorts down just enough to release the tip of his cock.  With her lips wrapped around his crown, Summer continued to stroke him, reaching up with her other hand to cup his balls.

Cameron moaned, his hips twitching and pressing towards her.  She kept her lips fastened around him, her fingers touching him.  His hands disappeared into her golden curls and he quickly orgasmed, filling her mouth.  She stroked the last bit out of him, swallowing every drop, before she leaned back and pulled his shorts back into place.

“Oh, sweetie,” he frowned, looking down at her. “You didn’t have to…”

She nodded, “Yes, I did.”

“But—”

“If I didn’t, you’d be uncomfortable all night,” she declared and scooted back into the center of the bed.

He clicked off the nightstand light, “But you shouldn’t have to…”

“Cam, we can’t… tonight.”

Slowly, he crawled into the bed, his arm slipping over her waist.  His lips touched her ear before he pulled the blankets tightly about them.

“I didn’t stay the night for sex, Summer,” he whispered in her ear.

Her arms covered his, her fingers weaving with his, “You didn’t?”

“Not at all,” he squeezed her again. “I just wanted to be close to you.”

She smiled, “Cam…”

“I know, sweetheart.  I know.”

Sucking on his thumb, Jamie rested his head in Summer’s lap.  She gently pet his hair, smiling as he looked up at her.  He kept his thumb in his mouth but returned her smile.  With a cup and a sippy cup in his hands, Cameron entered the living room and sat on Summer’s other side.  Jamie quickly sat up, reaching for his cup with his empty hand.  Chuckling, Cameron handed it to him.  Both adults laughed as he attempted to drink without removing his thumb from his mouth.  Summer gently reached up and pulled his hand away.

“Mommy,” he grinned before sucking on his sippy cup.

“That’s right,” she ruffled his hair.

“Your mom must have gone somewhere,” Cameron commented.

“Yeah,” she glanced at him. “LA for the weekend.  She was going to leave Friday when I got back from school, but with Jamie sick…”

His eyes widened slightly, “She left you here alone?”

“Not alone,” her hand rested on his knee. “I’ve got my two boys.”

Cameron smiled, “True, but… what if Stacie or Linda come over?”

Summer snorted, “They’ve never come over uninvited.”

“But they could…”

“They won’t.”

Before he could interject, the phone rang.  Rather than get up to answer it, Summer motioned to Cameron.  He picked the receiver up, stretched the cord behind him, and handed it to her.  As she greeted the caller, he kissed her cheek and made a face at Jamie.

“Audrey!?”

Hey, Summer… how’s it going?

Pausing to process the unspoken in her friend’s Texan twang, she frowned slightly, “Jamie’s been sick the past few days, but otherwise okay.  How are you?”

I’ve been…better.

“I thought you were having a blast on tour with KISS,” she responded, getting up from the couch, careful to not wrap Cameron in the cord.

It was fun but… the tour’s over.

“Oh, that’s too bad.  Are you back in Texas then?”

Not exactly…

“Where are you?” she tried to temper her concern.

New York City, but I can’t stay here much longer,” she admitted.

Summer glanced at Cameron as he and Jamie moved off the couch to play with toys on the floor, “Why not?”

Um, well… I think Paul’s wife has figured out why he’s spending so much time in the city.

She sat on the armrest, “Paul?”

I’ve been seeing Paul… um, er, Ace.  Everyone knows him as Ace.  But he’s just Paul to me,” she answered.

“I see.  So he’s married, the tour is over, and his wife has figured out that you exist?” Summer summarized.

I think so.  I don’t know for certain.  He hasn’t said anything, nor said that I need to leave the hotel yet, but… I can’t go back to Texas.  My parents still won’t talk to me since I filed for divorce and obviously I can’t stay with my ex-husband,” she stated. “I don’t know what to do.

She paused, watching Cameron and Jamie, “I don’t know what to tell you either, Audrey.”

Could I… Could I come and see you?  I haven’t been to San Diego in awhile.”

“Sure.  Of course you can.”

“Uh oh,” Cameron’s nose crinkled. “Someone needs a diaper change.”

Before Summer could cut the phone conversation short, he got up, picking up Jamie, and headed down the hall.  Smiling, Summer watched the two disappear into Jamie’s room.  It distracted her for the conversation briefly, but once she could not see or hear them, she focused back on her friend.

“Sorry, Cameron just went to change Jamie’s diaper.”

Wait.  Cameron’s there?

“Of course he is.  We spend a lot of our spare time together.  Plus he kinda spent the night,” Summer declared.

Audrey gasped, “He did!?  Did the two of you—

“No!  Not last night.  I got my period Thursday, so we aren’t doing that right now.”

Right now?  That means you have,” she pointed out. “Details, I want details.”

“I’m not giving you any.”

Oh come on.  You’re my best friend.  You’ve got to tell me these things.  Was it good?  Did he make you—

“It was amazing and that’s all I’m telling you,” she interrupted, glancing down the hallway.

But, Summer!”

“No, that’s all you get,” she replied. “And no more asking.  They’re coming back now.”

Fine, fine.  But when you get the chance…

Summer flushed, turning her back to the boys, “No.  Not going to happen.”

Audrey paused for a moment, “Paul just got back.  I wanted to touch base with you and everything.  Give my love to Jamie and Cameron.  I’ll call you again soon.”

“Take care of yourself, Audrey.”

I always do.

Accepting her son from Cameron after hanging up the phone, she showered Jamie with noisy kisses until he giggled.  He yawned as he settled in her lap, his big eyes watching Cameron sit back down.  Thumb popping back into his mouth, Jamie snuggled against Summer’s chest, still watching Cameron.  With a smile, Cameron rubbed his head as he leaned over to kiss Summer.

“Is Audrey okay?” he asked.

“I think so…” she touched her son’s forehead to check his temperature. “…but I’m not sure.  Something doesn’t sound right.”

“How so?”

“I don’t know…  She’s in New York with that guy from KISS, but the band’s tour is over.  Apparently, he has a wife and…”

Cameron frowned, “That’s never good.”

“I never thought she was going to be such a partier.  I mean, we had fun on tour with Led Zeppelin, but I didn’t think she would keep… touring.”

“What do you think she’s going to do?”

“She can’t go back to Texas so I guess… come here.”

Cameron touched her cheek gently, “I’m sure if she does, you’ll be the great friend you are and help her figure out things.”

She sighed, “I hope so.”

He leaned over and kissed her cheek, “How about I go pick us up something for dinner?  And a movie?”

“Sounds great,” she nodded. “But only if you’re staying over tonight too.”

“Of course I am,” Cameron grinned and stood up. “Any special requests?”

“A chocolate milkshake?”

“Done.  I’ll be back soon.”
