Author's Note: This series is based on Cameron Crowe's Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Using both the book and movie as guides, I hope to provide a glimpse into what could have happened, especially in relation to Midnight Shift. Completely canon with the epic and WILL contain spoilers.

Summary: November rolls around, which means it's Jamie's first birthday.  Additionally, Summer and Cameron have been "dating" for over six weeks.

Pushing the cart down the aisle, Summer grinned as Cameron looked over the toys.  He picked up a couple toys, shaking the boxes to see what sounds they actually made.  Finally deciding on two infant toys, he dropped them into the shopping cart, his eyes flicking to Summer.

“So, who all is coming to Jamie’s birthday party?”

“Dad is coming down,” Summer responded.

“And?”

“That’s it.  Just a small family affair,” she pushed the cart to the end of the aisle.

“His… father isn’t coming?” he asked softly.

Summer shook her head slightly, “Not as far as I know.”

“Missing Jamie’s first birthday?” Cameron shook his head.

“Yeah… well… yeah.  What else do we need?”

“Birthday hats?”

Summer chuckled, “If you want…”

They wandered about the store for a few more minutes before heading up to pay for their purchases.  With a smile, Cameron made Summer turn around while he dug some hidden things out of the shopping cart.  Covering her eyes, she turned back around, waiting until whatever was bagged.  Before she could protest, he paid for her items as well.

“Do we need to get cake?” he asked, heading towards the exit with their purchases.

“No,” Summer shook her head. “Mom and Dad are taking care of that.”

“Ah, okay.  Balloons?”

“He’s a year old,” she grinned. “I kinda think balloons are a choking hazard.”

“Oh right,” he stopped at his car, pausing to stare at it.

“I’ll open it,” Summer declared.

Before he could protest, her fingers reached into his jean pocket and fished out his keys.  His cheeks flushed, but she did not notice as she opened up the trunk.  Stepping to the side, she kissed his cheek before heading up to unlock their doors.  Taking a moment to compose himself, Cameron closed the trunk and headed up to the driver’s side.  His eyes flicked to the lock, noticing Summer had unlocked his door.  He smiled slightly before opening the door.

Inserting the keys into the ignition, Summer briefly grasped his hand, “Thank you for this.”

“For what?” his fingers lingered in hers before he reached to start the car.

“For being the best godfather my son could have,” she smiled, her hand dropping into her lap once he released it.

“Well of course,” Cameron smiled. “It’s my duty and responsibility, not just as his godfather, but as your best friend.”

“I… of course,” she nodded slightly.

They drove back to her house with little conversation, letting the music blasting from the speakers filled the car.  Summer stole another kiss on the cheek when they were stopped at an intersection, a group of their friends milling about.  Again Cameron flushed, but managed to keep composure and drive on.

Arriving at her house, Cameron sent her inside without the bags of gifts.  He lingered behind to wrap the gifts, as imperfect as his skills were.  He left behind the remaining paper and taped, carrying a stack of presents up to the door.  Hitting the doorbell with his elbow, he grinned when Bob opened the door and ushered him in.  Summer sat on the sofa, her son in her lap, happily giggling.

“Cameron,” Bob took the pile of gifts, “I see you’re spoiling my grandson.”

“That’s what a godfather is supposed to do,” he smiled. “But not all of them are his.”

“No?”

“Nope,” he responded.

“Then…?”

Heading over to Summer and Jamie, Cameron leaned over and kissed the top of the infant’s head, “Today isn’t just a day to celebrate the birth of this little guy.”

“It’s not?” Summer’s blue eyes met his.

“I got something for you too,” he muttered softly. “You are the one who went through eleven hours of labor for him.”

“You did?” her eyes lit up.

“Mmmhmmm,” he nodded and kissed her nose quickly. “But let me see my godson first.”

The baby giggled as he was passed from Summer’s arms into Cameron’s.  With a grin, he plopped down next to her and bounced the boy on his knee.  Jamie giggled and clapped, a trail of drool snaking out of the side of his mouth.  When Cameron stopped bounding the boy, Summer reached over and wiped her son’s mouth with a burp cloth.

“Now that you’ve got him all shaken up,” Adele spoke up, “how about some cake for the birthday boy?”

The four adults gathered around the table in the kitchen, Summer pausing to settle Jamie in his high chair.  Bob snapped pictures, making faces at his grandson until the baby erupted into giggles.  Adele set the cake on the table, closest to the young boy, and directed Cameron to light the single birthday candle.  The adults began to sing happy birthday to the boy, who really had no idea what was going on.  He merely kept reaching for the flickering candle.

At the song’s end, Summer discreetly blew out the candle for her son before pushing the cake towards Jamie.  The one-year-old instantly smashed both hands into the icing, squishing it between his fingers.  He happily slapped the cake, coating his hands in frosting.  Looking at his mother, he grinned and shoved his hands into his mouth.

“Oh this isn’t going to end well,” Summer muttered, though she was smiling.

While Jamie focused on two handfuls of cake, Adele quickly sliced off a chunk and divided it for the adults.  Summer let the boy continue to play with his birthday cake, not caring when handfuls hit the floor or got mashed into his tray.  She giggled as he threw some at Cameron, hitting him in the side of the face.

“James,” Cameron warned, wiping it from his face.

The baby merely giggled and shoved his hand into his mouth.  The adults tried not to give him too much attention, letting him entertain himself with handfuls of cake.  When they finished their plates, Cameron cleared the table, while Summer carried her son into the bathroom to dunk him in the tub.

With the baby washed and dressed in his fuzzy pajamas, but giggling and wiggling on his sugar high, Summer returned to the living room.  Her eyes instantly went to the pile of gifts, a small smile touching her lips.  She set the baby down, shaking her head as he happily crawled over to Cameron.  His hands clutched the young man’s pants, attempting to pull himself up.  With a chuckle, Cameron scooped up Jamie, settling him on his lap.

“Shall we open presents now?” Bob suggested.

“I really don’t think that Jamie cares about presents, Bob,” Adele stated.

He grumbled something, but picked up one of the wrapped packages anyways.  Without a word, he handed it to Summer, letting her direct the unwrapping for her son.  Jamie instantly took to the colored paper, sticking it in his mouth and chewing on it.  Scrunching his nose, Cameron carefully pulled the paper out of his mouth and tried to distract the child with the newly unwrapped toy.

Within a few minutes, the young boy began to fuss, clearly crashing from his sugar high.  Shaking her head, Adele scooped the child up from Cameron.  Her eyes flicked to Bob, silently instructing him to follow her lead.  He hesitated for a moment before getting to his feet and wishing Summer and Cameron a gruff good night.

“You didn’t open yours,” Cameron pointed out once they were alone.

“It’s not my birthday,” she quickly retorted.

He leaned forward and plucked the small package from the table, “I already explained it.  Open it.”

With a slight smile, Summer accepted the gift and removed the paper quickly.  Her blue eyes flicked up to meet his briefly before she cracked open the box.  Inside rested a silver heart pendant on a glittery chain.  Grinning, Summer snatched it out of the box.  Her fingers quickly dropped it into Cameron’s hand and she turned her back to him, lifting her hair so he could fasten the necklace about her throat.

Touching the heart as it rested against her skin, Summer turned back to him and threw her arms around his neck, “Thank you, Cameron.  It’s lovely.”

His arms circled her waist, embracing her gently, “I thought of you the moment I saw it.”

“Thank you,” she repeated before quickly kissing him.

Both of their eyes widened.  Though they had kissed in public, when spending time with their high school friends, they had yet to cross that line in private.  It was one thing to play the role of boyfriend and girlfriend in front of their friends, but completely something else when no one was watching.  Searching his eyes quickly, Summer leaned forward and stole another kiss, but did not allow it to deepen.

“I should… I should go.  We have school tomorrow,” Cameron muttered, but did not pull away from her.

“Yeah… we do.”

His fingers reached up and touched her hair softly, “He’s a fool, you know.”

“Huh?”

“Jimmy,” Cameron shifted slightly away from her. “He should have called at the bare minimum.  To miss his son’s first birthday…”

“I know but…” she looked away.

“What?” Cameron’s hands grasped hers.

“I haven’t heard from him in three weeks,” she muttered quickly.

“What?!” Cameron’s voice rose.

Summer shifted away, “He has not called nor written nor been home when I have called.”

His eyes darkened ever more, “That’s such—”

“I know.”

“You shouldn’t —”

“I know,” she interrupted again.

Sighing, Cameron looked over her, trying to read her emotions.  His eyes dropped to the necklace he had just fastened about her throat.  Suddenly, he realized she no longer wore Jimmy’s ring on a necklace.

“Summer?”

“Yeah?”

“How long have you not been wearing Jimmy’s ring?” he asked softly.

Her eyes looked down briefly, before meeting his again, “Since the day after you asked me to be your girlfriend.”

Heading out the cluster of tables during the lunch break, Summer listened while Stacie complained about one of her classes.  Not entirely a part of the conversation at all, her blue eyes connected with Cameron’s as he sat down with Mike and Rat.  He smiled slightly at her, quickly eliciting a grin in response.  A moment later, she stumbled and nearly spilled her French fries all over the place.

“Katrin!” Linda snapped. “What’s your problem?”

Her eyes flicked to the older girl, “Um, nothing.  Just clumsy, I guess.”

“You’ve been out of it all day.  It’s like you — wait, where did this come from?” she pointed to the necklace sparkling around Summer’s neck.

“Oh, Dave gave it to me,” she responded, eyes glancing at him again.

“Wait, what?” Linda quickly pulled Summer to sit at the closest table.

“Yeah, last week.”

The brunette gasped, “You two are having sex!”

“What? No!” Summer quickly focused on her friend, briefly glancing at Stacie.

“Details!” the younger girl demanded.

Summer shook her head, “There aren’t any.  We are not having sex.”

Linda rolled her eyes, folding her arms across her chest, “You mean to tell me that you have been going steady for six weeks and you’re not having sex?”

“We’re not having sex,” she stated softly.

“I don’t believe you.”

“Why aren’t you?” Stacie interjected.

“Um…”

“You’re not a virgin, are you?” Linda asked.

Summer forced a blush, “No, of course not.”

“Then why haven’t you done the deed?  I thought you really liked him.”

“I do!” her eyes met the other girl’s. “We’re just not… ready yet.”

“Has he at least felt you up?” Stacie asked.

She glanced at the other girl, “You guys have seen as much as we’ve done.”

Both girls stared at her blankly.

“What?  You have!”

“Then what are you doing when you spend all your time with him outside of school?” Linda asked.

“…talk.  We talk a lot.”

“What she really means is they fuck,” the dark-haired girl said to the other blonde.

“No!  We really do spend lots of time talking.  I love talking to him.  He makes me feel important and special and… yeah,” Summer claimed.

“He hasn’t made you orgasm yet,” Linda declared, shaking her head.

“Ugh,” Summer rolled her eyes. “Of course he hasn’t, because we’re not having sex.  But when we do, I’m sure he will make me cum again and again.”

Both of the girls’ eyes widened.  Satisfied that she seemed to finally silence her friends, Summer stood up.  Grabbing her fries, she headed directly over to Cameron.  Without even greeting him, she leaned down and kissed him deeply.  Cameron instantly flushed, not entirely sure how to react.  Pulling out of the kiss, she plopped down in his lap and offered him one of her fries.

“Katrin?” he muttered after swallowing the fry.

Summer kissed him quickly again, “Can I talk to you?”

“Uh, sure…”

Getting out of his lap and leaving her fries on the table, Summer led Cameron away from the group of guys, her fingers intertwined with his.  She stole another kiss while they were both visible to their respective groups.  After that third kiss, she pulled him into the building, out of everyone’s view.

“Okay, seriously, what is this all about?” Cameron asked quietly, glancing around to make certain no one was eavesdropping.

“The girls think we’re having sex.  Don’t the guys?”

He flushed, “It doesn’t matter what they think…”

“That means they do,” Summer countered.  “I’d hate to let down anyone’s expectations.”
His blush deepened more, “Summer…”

Smirking slightly, she kissed him quickly, “I don’t know who Summer is, but if you’re going to kiss me like that, you can call me anything.”

His eyes dropped to the floor, “We can’t be… you’re…”

“You’re right.  Not here at school,” she kissed his forehead. “But when we’re out of class, I want to… Hello, Mr. Harris.”

“Miss Davis.  Mr. Cameron,” he nodded.

Waiting until the teacher passed, Summer kissed his ear, nibbling briefly, “Take me home and do naughty things to me.”

His eyes widened to the size of saucers and his cheeks turned a deep, deep red.  His lips moved to protest, but no words bubbled from his mouth.  Giggling, Summer kissed each of his blazing cheeks before stepping back.

“Skip class with me?”

“Uh…”

“We can go back to my house.  My mom won’t mind.”

“Uh…”

Summer giggled, “Relax, Dave.  Relax.”

“You’ve kinda made that hard, Katrin.”

Her eyes flicked down and she grinned, “Oh really?”

“Dammit,” he swore softly, shifting slightly. “You can’t be serious.”

“I am.”

His eyes finally lifted to meet hers, “Seriously?”

She grinned, “Everyone already thinks we are…”

“But that doesn’t mean that we need to…”

“But why no—”

Before she finished her question the initial lunch bell rang.  Students began to fill the hallway, interrupting Summer and Cameron’s alone moment.  With their moment interrupted, he attempted to regain his composure while she pulled back slightly.  With a few deep breaths, he stood up straight again.

“What were you thin—”

“We’ll talk about it after school,” she quickly interrupted, her eyes motioning to his approaching friends. “Walk me to class?”
