Sitting on the sofa in the living room, Cameron’s arm loosely around her shoulders, Summer smiled.  Her head tilted to the side, resting fully on his shoulder.  Jamie, Nessa, and Bob sat around the coffee table, huddled over a game of Life.  The elder musician patiently played with the children.  Though he would never publicly admit to it, he loved spending time with the kids, both his grandchildren and his own children; admitting that would go against his public, indifferent attitude.

Cameron’s free hand reached across his body and clasped Summer’s hand, “Do you think he’s letting them win?”

She chuckled, “Doubtful.  He might love being a grandpa and a daddy, but I don’t think his pride would let him just lose to two kids.”

He kissed the top of her head, “I suppose not.”

A crash sounded in the kitchen, waking up Hayley who slept in her carseat still.  Summer quickly pulled away from Cameron, heading to pick up her daughter.  Both Cameron and Bob looked at the kitchen entrance, wondering if they should check on Adele’s progress.  A few angry, Yiddish curses filled the air, warning both men to stay away.  Summer, however, did not heed that warning and headed into the kitchen with her eighteen-month old daughter crying on her hip.

“Is everything… oh my…” her blue eyes felt to the mess on the floor.

Adele looked up from where she sat on the tile next to the smattering of potatoes, stuffing, and veggies scattered around, “I c-can’t—”

“No, no.  We can fix this, Mom,” Summer quickly assured her.

Still fussing, Hayley reached towards her grandmother.  Seeing the blond girl’s outstretched hands, Adele wiped her tears and accepted the girl.  Holding her close, she showered kisses on the child’s face, cheering herself in the same motion.  Saying nothing, Summer moved about the kitchen and cleaned up the mess.  After discarding the large pieces of broken dishes and the food and sweeping up the rest, she pulled open the refrigerator to see how to best make up for the lost items.  Leaving her mother to baby duty, Summer hustled around the kitchen, creating new side dishes to make up for what had been lost.

“Okay… okay…”Adele nudged Summer out of the way. “This little girl needs something I can’t give her.   I… thank you, Summer.”

Trading her wooden spoon for her daughter, Summer smiled, “Of course, Mom.”

Sitting down at the nearby breakfast table, Summer pulled her dress down in the front so that her daughter could nurse while her mother continued to cook.  Stepping into the kitchen cautiously a moment later, Cameron glanced around before fully entering the chaotic room.  He paused and pecked Adele on the cheek, softly telling her that everything smelled wonderful.

His dark eyes flicked to Summer nursing Hayley, “There are my beautiful girls.”

Without pause, he headed over to them, caressed Hayley’s downy blonde curls as he leaned down and kiss Summer before whispering, “Everything okay?”

“Yeah.  It will just be a bit… non-traditional in aspects,” she responded softly.

He kissed her again, “As long as I’m with you, that’s all that matters.”

“CAMERON, CAMERON, CAMERON!” Jamie ran into the kitchen.

“What?” he turned to face the boy, though his hand dropped to squeeze Summer’s briefly.

“I WON!”

He smiled at the ten-year-old boy, “Good job, Jamie.”

He grinned, “Grandpa says we can go swim until dinner.”

Cameron glanced briefly at Summer who just shrugged, “Well if Grandpa says it’s okay…”

“Will you come with us?”

“Of course.  Let’s go get our trunks on.”

“Ughhhhh,” Cameron moaned, collapsing on the bed next to Summer. “I shouldn’t have eaten so much.”

Rolling her eyes, she clicked off the bedside lamp before snuggling up against him, “Maybe you shouldn’t have had another slice of pie after the kids went to bed.”

“And what was I supposed to do when your mom handed me that second slice?  Tell her no?”

She softly kissed his mouth, “Sometimes you’re too nice, Cameron.”

“Nuh uh.”

“Do you ever tell anyone no?”

“…of course I do.”

“When?”

He remained silent.

“You’ve always been a Yes-Man, Cameron.”

“Summer… I can say no.  Ask me something right now.”

“Do you want to have sex with me?”

Cameron paused, “That’s not fair.”

She smiled, even though he could not see it in the darkness, “Why?”

“Because I lose no matter what I say.  If I say yes, I prove you right.  If I say no, you’ll be—”

Summer kissed his mouth quickly, “Go to sleep, my fiancé.  We can discuss this again in the morning.”

His arms tightened around her slightly, “How early are you getting up?”

“Same time as always, Cam…”

“Not going to go out shopping?”

Summer laughed, “You’re funny, Cameron.  I’ve never done that, you know that.”

He smirked, “Oh I know, but I was hoping…”

“Yes?”

“To prove you right in the morning.”
