Title: Midnight Shift: Chapter Forty-seven, Crimson
Rating: NC-17 [language,sex]

Summary: Robert is transferred to Jersey to evade British tax laws, so Jimmy, Summer, and Robert's children follow.  Summer visits Robert, but he's too drugged up to notice her presence.  Eventually she does speak with him during a lucid moment (see the ficlet), which ultimately leads to...

Waking suddenly with pain shooting through her abdomen, Summer struggled to get out of bed without disturbing the two young children.  Hands on her rounded belly, she slowly made her way into the bathroom and closed the door.  With a groan she sat on the closed toilet, her eyes squeezed closed as she breathed deeply.  Slowly, the pain subsided and she opened her eyes again.  She sighed and struggled to stand up long enough to flip the toilet lid up.

Distraught by the crimson in the toilet once more, Summer quickly washed her hands and headed out to call Jimmy.  A couple of steps from the bathroom she realized the children were awake.  Ignoring her worries, she helped Karac into the bathroom with his cast while instructing Carmen to decide from the room service menu what to have for breakfast. Settling in the living of the suite with the two children, she opened her mouth to ask what they wanted to do for the day when another pain shot through her body.

Concerned, Carmen reached over and covered Summer’s hands with her own, “Does the baby hurt?”

Summer nodded slightly, “Yes.”

“When Mommy hurt when Karac was inside her, Daddy would sing to her.  Do you want me to sing?”

“Sure,” she smiled slightly.

The two children proceeded to serenade Summer with a mash up of a number of different songs.  Even though their selections made little sense, a smile curved her lips.  The pain did not really subside, but she was able to focus on their silly singing instead of the pain.  It was almost completely forgotten when their room service breakfast arrived.

“What are we going to do today?” Carmen asked between bites of pancake.

“Well, I don’t really know,” she responded. “I’ll call and see if we can go and visit your mom and dad.  Then maybe we can go somewhere fun?”

Getting slowly to her feet, Summer headed over to the phone while the two children continued to eat breakfast.  Not entirely sure how to get a hold of Jimmy or the hospital, she called down to the front desk.  After a brief conversation with the girl, she was connected to Jimmy’s house, as he thought ahead and left the number with the front desk.

Rubbing her belly, grimacing when a shot of pain spiked through her again, she waited for someone to answer the phone.  When a feminine voice answered, Summer nearly hung up.  Instead, with another quake of pain racking her body, she squeaked a request to speak with Jimmy.  There was a moment of hesitation before she was told to hold.

“Summer?” Jimmy’s voice finally filled her ear, just as the pains began to cease.

“Hi,” she muttered. “The children want to see their parents today.  I was wondering…”

Hearing her sharp gasp, he quickly asked, “Summer, are you okay?”

“The stomach pains are back,” she confessed softly.

He sighed, “I’m sending a car for you and the children.”

“Are we going to go see Robert?”

“Eventually.  He’s being transferred to Jersey.  So am I.  You and the children will come with me,” he declared.

“I… are you sure?”

“Yes.  Maureen is not unable to take care of the children right now, nor should they even see her.”

“What?  Why?”

“She’s still in a coma, Summer.”

“Oh.”

“Get the children ready to leave.  The car will be there in twenty minutes.”

Hanging up the phone, she forced a smile and turned back to the children.  She happily informed them of their plans for the day, glossing over the fact they would not see their mother that day.  Neither seemed to mind and quickly finished their breakfasts so they could get ready to leave.

Before long, Summer settled on a small plane with the two children on either side of her.   Jimmy sat across the aisle from her, reading over a stack of papers.  He glanced over at the three and smiled before returning his attention to his work.  He had not asked about her pains, but she presumed that had everything to do with the children at her side. He likely did not want to worry them any more than they already were.

The flight to Jersey was short, making Summer feel a bit better.  Her stomach began to cramp as the plane began to land.  Jimmy met her eyes and briefly she dropped her façade, letting him see her pain and worry.  He quickly brushed his lips across hers before leading her and Robert’s children off the plane.

Upon reaching the hotel and letting the children get settled, Jimmy pulled Summer aside, “How are you feeling?”

She frowned, “I’m still getting pains.”

“When we go to the hospital to see Robert, I want you to go see a doctor.  I will attend the children.”

“Are you sure?”

He nodded, “Yes, of course.”

“Jimmy, what if something is wrong?”

He kissed her forehead, “Worry not, princess.  I’m sure everything is okay.”

Lying on her side, Summer closed her eyes.  She had not ventured to see Robert, leaving the children in Jimmy’s care.  Instead, she visited with a doctor who quickly examined her.  He determined she was in pre-labor and quickly administered drugs to stop such.  By the time Jimmy collected her from the maternity ward, the pains ceased, only fatigue remained.

The children wanted to play and tell her about their visit with their father, but Jimmy kept them away from her.  She could not imagine him caring for two young children and nearly fought to watch over them.  He assured her that the children would be fine before tucking her into the bed.  Luckily for him, the hotel provided nanny service.

Once the matron arrived to watch over Robert’s children, Jimmy slipped out of the hotel suite.  Even though seeing his children had brightened his mood, the singer remained closer to the edge of darkness than Jimmy preferred.  Watching his interactions with the children and the nurses, Jimmy decided there was only one thing that would cheer up Robert: Summer.  As much as it pained him to take his princess to see Robert, especially fearing that the two would reconnect and he would once more lose her, Jimmy knew this was the correct thing to do.

Besides, he had a feeling she would be beyond sexy in what he planned for her to wear.

After an hour of shopping, during which he procured the required outfit along with a number of toys to keep the children occupied, Jimmy returned to the hotel.  He checked on Carmen and Karac, bestowing gifts on them before leaving them with the matronly nanny.  Slipping into the darkened bedroom, he placed his other shopping bag on a nearby chair, kicked off his shoes, and approached the bed.

Summer did not stir so he carefully climbed onto the bed and lay behind her.  His arms slipped around her, gently pulling her close.  She murmured softly, but did not fully stir.  Softly his hands rubbed her belly, glad that he made her go to the doctor.  He could not imagine how she would react if she lost the baby for whatever reason.

“Jimmy?” she mumbled softly.

“Yes, princess,” he kissed her ear.

“The children…”

“Are busy playing with toys in the other room with a nanny,” he answered her unfinished question.

“Oh…”

He kissed her ear again, “I think you should go see Robert as well.”

“I don’t know…”

“He’s in horrible spirits.  Seeing you would make him feel so much better.  I’m sure of it.”

“But…”

Jimmy squeezed her gently, “Give him something to live for, Summer.  Give him a reason to fight.”

“But the kids…”

“They made him smile briefly, but not for long.  He’s on a lot of painkillers right now,” he pointed out.

“So he might not even realize I’m there.”

Jimmy pushed up enough to lean over and kiss her worried mouth, “He’ll know.”

Pulling down the short skirt of the nurse’s outfit, Summer frowned.  Jimmy clearly thought her smaller than she was.  The white fabric strained against her breasts and was pulled taut across her rounded belly.  Even with the little hat, Summer did not believe for a moment anyone would confuse her for a nurse.  It was just too ridiculous.

Yet as she headed towards Robert’s room, led by Jimmy, a number of patients and one doctor stopped her to ask her questions.

“Are you sure about this?” Summer asked softly as they stopped outside the room.

Jimmy smiled, glancing up and down at her, “I cannot imagine you not cheering him up.  You are definitely curing my blues.”

Rolling her eyes, she stepped beyond him and entered Robert’s hospital room.  Her breath caught as her blue eyes fell on the injured singer.  She bit her bottom lip to keep her gasp from startling him.  Plaster casts seemed to wrap all of his body.  Wires and tubes connected him to machines that whirred and beeped.

Her heart no longer beat.  Her breath no longer fluttered.  Her thoughts no longer danced.

She could not believe her eyes.  Her strong and beautiful golden god looked so…mortal.  Looking over his frailty, she could not imagine how horrible off Maureen was.  The children… she needed to protect the children now more than ever.

Slowly Summer approached the bed where Robert slept.  Carefully, she pulled a chair up next to his bed.  Her fingers reached for his, barely touching his fingertips.  He did not stir, at all.

She sat with him for two hours.  He mumbled a couple of times and shifted, unconsciously attempting to break free from his restraints, but his eyes never turned to hers.  His fingers wiggled a few times in her hand, but she saw no true reaction from him at all.

A hand touched her back gently, drawing her attention away from Robert, “Jimmy…”

He leaned down and kissed her softly, “Let’s go back to the children, Summer.  They miss you.”

She slowly got to her feet and followed Jimmy from the hospital room.  Stopping at the door, she glanced over her shoulder at Robert.  Ever so briefly she thought their eyes connected, but it passed in a blink.

“Jimmy, he never…”

“He knew you were there, princess.  He knew you were there.”

Though she changed into regular clothes upon return to the hotel suite, not wanting to confuse the children at all, Summer was not the least surprised when she stepped into the bedroom that night and the nurse’s outfit lay on the bed.  However, she was not in the mood to placate Jimmy at all.  So she picked up the outfit, carefully folded it, and placed it on the dresser.  Taking no time at all, Summer removed her comfortable cotton dress, turned off the single lamp, and crawled into the bed.

Jimmy entered the bedroom of the suite a few minutes later, drink in hand.  He frowned in the darkness, set his drink on the dresser next to the outfit, and closed the door.  Stripped of his own clothing a minute later, Jimmy made his way to the bed, swearing when he accidentally stubbed his toe on the footboard.  The weight of his body sinking the bed made Summer turn over onto her back.  His hand slid over her body as he pulled the covers close and cuddled her nude body.

“Princess…”

“He looked so…”

“He’s going to be fine, Summer.”

She nodded, her cheek rubbing against his shoulder, though she did not really believe him.

“And so will Maureen.  I talked to Grant while you were with Robert and he says she’s stabilized,” he declared.

“That’s… good for the children.”

“It is.  You have been wonderful for them too, Summer,” he proclaimed.

“Really?”

“Summer, sweetheart,” he kissed her temple, “they light up when you walk into the room.  You’re a natural.”

She smiled slightly, “I’m glad you think so.”

“You’ll be a great mum,” he declared.

“I hope so…”

Jimmy paused for a moment, “Did you tell Robert today?”

“No, he never woke up.”

He sighed, “It was likely the painkillers he’s on.  We’ll go back in a few days once he’s had time to settle and they’ve adjusted his medications.”

“What about the children?”

“He spoke with them a bit today on the phone while you were napping.  That seemed to be enough for the two, for now.”

“Oh… okay.”

“How about we do something fun?” he suggested.

“Jimmy, I really don’t feel like sex right now,” Summer countered.

He chuckled, “I don’t mean right now.  Tomorrow… we’ll take the children to the beach.”

She paused in thought for a moment, “How would that work with their casts?  I can’t imagine them not filling them up with sand.”

“Oh… right you are.  Well maybe a park or something less sandy?”

She sighed and snuggled closer, “Whatever you say, Jimmy.  Whatever you say.”

Within a week of being in Jersey, the children were bored.  Besides taking them to see Robert, though he never seemed to notice her, Summer was running out of options.  They went to parks daily, visited the zoo, played with toys and watched TV back at the cottage Jimmy moved them to.

On top of running out of things to do, Summer found herself becoming fatigued far more quickly.  She needed an afternoon nap far sooner than the children did.  If Jimmy had not hired the nanny, she did not know what she would do.  While she had wanted to get to know Robert’s children, she had not expected it to be quite like that.  Even with those thoughts, she would not trade her moments with the children for anything else in the world.

Curled on her side, attempting to nap so that she could entertain the children later, Summer tried to focus on all of the good.  Robert’s health was improving, enough that she hoped he would be lucid for his birthday visit later that afternoon.  It was the last time she was going to attempt to surprise him with the nurse outfit and that was only because it was his birthday.  Then she would get rid of it and never wear it again, not even if Jimmy begged her to.  She just felt… wrong in it.

Hearing the door open, she glanced at it, waiting to see if she could see a silhouette or not.  Seeing the outline of her lover, she smiled slightly and relaxed back into the bed.  The door clicked as he locked it and Jimmy headed over to the bed.  As Summer lay uncovered on the bed, wearing just a simple, light dress, his lips easily kissed up her leg.  He paused at her knee to gently push her skirt up towards her waist.

Smiling slightly, Summer rolled over onto her back.  Taking that as an unspoken “yes”, Jimmy pushed her skirt up over her rounded belly and leaned down.  His lip gently kissed her soft, blonde curls while his fingers caressed her thighs.  A smirk danced across his face as her legs parted, giving him the opportunity to do exactly as he wished.  Glancing up at her, but unable to really see her face over the round of her belly and the darkness of the room, Jimmy softly licked her sex.

Moaning, Summer quickly covered her mouth, not wanting the children to hear her.  Jimmy chuckled and pulled her hand free from her mouth.  Before she could question his actions, Jimmy once more returned to licking and sucking her sex.  His magical fingers teased her folds, but he did not push them inside.  Instead, he continued to tease her until her honey began to ooze out of her sex.  He licked her once more before leaning up.

Summer’s hands went to his forearms as she looked up at him.  With little pause, as he had already unzipped, Jimmy thrust into her wet body.  She gasped as he kept his thrusts slow and even.  He balanced with one hand, keeping his weight off of her, as he carefully pulled her breasts free from her dress.  His fingers circled and pinched her nipple gently.  She gasped and moaned, arching her back to press her breast into his hand.  Smiling, Jimmy leaned down and suckled gently as he continued to push in her.

“Summer,” he mumbled against her breast.

“Yes?” she breathed.

He pinched her other nipple, “You’re…leaking.”

“What?” alarm shot through her voice.

Jimmy’s tongue ran circles around her nipple while he continued to squeeze it, “Worry not, princess.”

He suckled on each breast for awhile, illustrating with his actions that she had nothing to worry about.  Hearing her moans soften, Jimmy leaned back up, pushing up onto his knees.  He held pushed her legs up, his fingers clasping her thighs just under the backs of her knees.  His eyes locked with hers in the darkness as he began to thrust harder.  She squeaked and moaned, her hands squeezing her bouncing breasts together.

Breaking eye contact, Jimmy looked up at the gauzy canopy as Summer’s body began to contract around him.  He grunted, attempting to hold back his orgasm until she shuddered through hers.  Once her body began to squeeze his rhythmically, Jimmy could no longer restrain himself.  He moaned like an animal and thrust hard twice.  His orgasm shot down his spine like lightning, filling her squishy body.

He remained buried deeply in her body until his no longer sputtered.  Slowly he rolled off of Summer and fixed his pants.  Summer arched her body up to pull her skirt back down after pulling the front of her dress back in place.  Saying nothing, she rolled on her side towards Jimmy.  He carefully pulled her close, smiling as she cuddled against him.  Feeling her relax into sleep, he kissed her forehead before wiggling away from her soft embrace.   He slipped a pillow against her body where he had laid before disappearing into the bathroom to check his appearance before heading back out to the living room.

Glancing at the children who sat on either side of the nanny reading some book, Jimmy sat down and picked up a folder Grant sent to him earlier in the day.  He flipped through the papers, barely paying any attention to the other three in the room at all.  Now that his libido was satiated for the moment he could concentrate on business — and ignore Robert’s children.

Walking down the hospital corridor, Summer flung the nurse’s hat in the trash can.  Her final visit to Robert had not gone as expected, not at all.  Yes, she had told him she was pregnant with his child, but it had not gone as planned at all.  Now she was blaming the entire car accident on herself.  He had absolutely no right to tell her what he had.  Summer did not need to be thinking about the very fact he was going to divorce Maureen made her drive into a tree.  It was too much, way too much.

Jimmy did not attempt to stop Summer from storming out of the hospital.  He knew that learning the cause of the crash would be difficult for her, not that he thought she was the reason of the crash.  Maureen’s inability to remain calm in the situation was.  To be honest, Jimmy completely understood why Robert chose that particular moment to ask for a divorce.  He certainly had to be thinking that Maureen would react calmly, especially in front of the children.  No one could have predicted the accident.  And no one could blame Summer for it; she likely was not even mentioned when Robert asked for the divorce.

Standing curbside, the two waited for the car to come around.  Jimmy reached for her hand, but Summer quickly snatched hers away.  Frowning, he stepped closer as she stepped away.  She continued to avoid his touch.  Giving up, he sighed, his mouth opening to speak.  Before he uttered anything, the car stopped in front of them.  Jimmy instantly reached for the door.

Summer took a step towards the car and abruptly stopped.  Jimmy’s eyes went to her, thinking she was about to pitch a fit about being in a car with him or something like that.  Instead, her eyes were wide and she clutched her stomach.  Without a thought he slammed the car door closed and turned to her.  Tears instantly streaked her cheeks and he watched as the white fabric of her nurse dress instantly darkened crimson.  The color drained from Jimmy’s face as he quickly shouted and waved for help from the hospital.

Moments later that felt like hours, medics wheeled Summer into the hospital on a gurney.  She groaned and mumbled, pain evident in what little voice Jimmy could hear.  He remained as close as possible, trying to reach out and touch her hand or her shoulder.  He did not want her to think she was alone for even a moment.

But then a door was slammed in his face.

“That’s my girl—”

A nurse dressed far more conservatively than Summer pushed him away from the door, “We’re going to do everything we can to help her, sir.  I need you to calm down and tell me everything you know.”

“I need to be with her.  I need to be in there with her,” he declared, attempting to step around the woman to get into the ward with Summer.

“Sir,” her hands went to his chest, “you can’t go in there.”

His dark eyes went to hers, “Yes, I can.  Don’t you know who I a—”

“I don’t care who you are, sir.  You would only be in the way of us helping you girlfriend and unborn baby.  Now if you want to help her, I need you to take a deep breath and tell me anything medical you know about her.  Nothing is too small.”

He continued to glower at her, but remained silent.

“That’s better.  Come with me,” she instructed, her hand touching his elbow to guide him away.

After pacing for what seemed like years, Jimmy finally gave in and sat on one of the hard plastic chairs.  It had been three hours since he last saw Summer.  He barely had any mind to call the nanny and let her know they would not be returning as planned.  He wanted a smoke or a hard drink, but he did not dare leave the waiting room and miss any update on Summer’s well being.

Getting to his feet, Jimmy paced over to the nurse’s station once more.  Before he even attempted to get a nurse’s attention, the nurse from earlier approached him.  His heart froze and his soul seized up.  The look on her face did not bode well.

“Summer… is she…?”

“Stable,” the nurse declared, motioning him away from everyone else.

“What… what happened?”

She sighed, “Summer went into labor and—”

“But she’s only four months along!” he interjected.

“I know,” she touched his arm reassuringly. “And we did everything that we could but… we could not save the child.  Our best conjecture is the cramping you spoke of before was when she truly lost the baby.  The doctor can speak more on this matter with you.”

“Summer…”

“She lost a lot of blood.  But we managed to finally stop it and she’s going to be okay.”

He sighed deeply, “Can I… can I see her?”

“She hasn’t been moved to her room yet, but I’ll take you up there.  Is there anyone you need to call?”

“Um… yes.  Yes, there is,” he nodded.

“I’ll show you to a private room you can call from before we go up to her room.”

“Thank you,” Jimmy nodded, following the nurse.

Sitting at a desk in front of a phone, his dark eyes focused on the device.  While logically he wanted to call Grant to see what the manager could do for them, his instinct was to make a completely different call.  He picked up the phone and reached to dial.  Before pressing any button, he set it back down.  He had no idea how to reach her family, not without Grant’s help.  The manager was the most logical person to call first, yet it felt so wrong.

Picking it back up, he quickly dialed the first number that came to mind, “Hello, Charlotte?  It’s Jimmy.  Something’s happened.  I don’t… I don’t know what to do…”
